An admin/webmaster of a site I used to frequent (and still visited) used it as means to cope with and eventually leave an abusive relationship. It might have saved her life, actually. She's just such a great admin overall - honestly, probably one of the best admins ever, no joke. We haven't interacted a whole lot 1:1 (just here and there), but I kind of love her.

Of course , the fan community overall has been inspiring. I've been in two fandoms, one super large and one so small it was pretty much just one website in the end. There've been ups and downs, especially the Harry Potter fandom (we... definitely put the "fun" in dysfunctional), but what I see at the end of the day is the love and the power. I've talked about all that before, though (both for this challenge and in general) so I won't teal deer.

One thing that does come to mind is the time that a teacher said something very cruel to me, and an older online friend made me tell my parents. That was hugely important, because I wasn't going to, but with her being older and wiser she of course knew I had to. Overall as a teen in fandom, I had a lot of great mentors. Sure, I cringe at some of the memories (I had teenage moments), but I'm also grateful for the people who gave me guidance.

tl;dr FANDOM inspires me! Even if it's definitely been on CRAX once or twice or a million times. :)

In your own space, promote at least one canon that you adore (old, new, forever fandom). Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Well, I definitely feel that Crazy Ex-Girlfriend tends to be overlooked - and that there's actually a lot of text to be explored even within the fan community, which has a lot of interesting discourse but can also focus more on the cast (I love Rachel Bloom, but I don't want to wear her skin as a dress, you know?) or on... things I feel are interesting to talk about, but also feel there are deeper themes. But I also think people would love the show if they looked past the title. It covers feminism, mental illness, tanks the Betty and Veronica trope (thank God), friends as family... and it's a musical. Although that's probably a dealbreaker for a lot of people.

(I will note that since it does talk about mental illness very frankly, there are some triggery spots. Especially in early season three.)

The Good Place is a show I feel more people should definitely be watching, even if I'm not thrilled with the most recent episode. (More about that later, maybe once I've rewatched the episode.) While it's initially a very silly comedy, it does slowly incorporate a lot of themes about human nature and what it means to be a better person, and soon becomes more of a dark comedy. But not a "dark comedy" that's actually a drama with a few funny moments, a comedy with darker elements. (Actually, I contend that if TGP weren't a comedy, it would be an incredibly dark show. Same with Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, actually.)

Speaking of dark comedies, One Day at a Time is another show I think tends to be overlooked a bit. It's an adaptation of the 70's-80's show, with a Cuban-American family. It's incredibly progressive, including one of the very few non-binary characters on television.  It can get a little Very Special Episodey, although I think by the third season they do a good job of keeping their messages as part of the overall arc, rather than having An Episode About A Topic. And even as annoying as the VSE can get, it does mean we see a lot of important stuff, so I'll take the slight preachyness. (So we're clear, I 1000% approve of the messages, I just feel certain episodes handle it in a VSE way, rather than in a way that comes across naturally. Does that make sense?

I realize this wasn't exactly a straight answer, but those are mine, so there you have it. If you've seen these shows, let me know what you think below! If you're doing the challenge, I look forward to seeing what you came up with. Presumably a shorter list than me, I'm so Chidi - no straight one answer here. :)

I'm going to link to a few fannish things people might be interested in.

 - The Friar's Tale. (LJ/DW) The Friar spends the next thousand years dealing with the aftermath of an attempted deathbed confession - of one Salazar Slytherin. Harry Potter,  PG-13, gen.

- Buffy essay: Is Dawn Summers Really the Worst? (LJ/DW)

-  Harry Potter and the Philosopher/s/Sorcerer's Stone, Twitter Style. PS/SS from the perspective of Hermione's (very anachronistic) tweets. Just for fun. :) (DW Link)

In your own space, make a list — anything between one and ten things is a sweet spot, but don't feel constrained by that! - of things that you wish existed in fandom or elsewhere, or that you'd like someone to make for you. Are you dying for podfic of your writing? Do you need icons for a character that doesn't get much fanart? Is there a story you want to read? Are you looking for new canons to get into? Would you like a collaborator for a project?

1. I say this a lot so apologies to old friends who've heard this before, but I really wish there were more deep diving fan conversations. I find you get most of that on podcasts and vlogs anymore, but it's harder to interact in those cases, unless you're active in their Patreon groups.

2. More fics that are less focused specifically on romance and more on exploring the worlds and characters. I want backstory fic, what-if fic, etc.

3. As far as new canons go, I wouldn't mind a fantasy show or book series that's closer to Harry Potter and Buffy in tone. A lot of them are so grimdark, and... yes, Harry Potter and Buffy both got fairly grimdark (Buffy especially, but even Harry Potter), but there was lots of friendship goodness and positivity goodness and fun deadpan snark. I get a bit of that from The Good Place, so maybe more things like that - except more squarely focused on saving the world from The Big Bad. (After all, if The Good Place weren't a comedy, it would actually be pretty damn dark. I need to write an essay about how TGP shares some threads with Angel the Series - which, incidentally, I never liked as much as Buffy.)

4. As far as projects go, I have two Harry Potter AU ideas I would LOVE for someone to write, because I don't have time. I would happily co-write or share my ideas or however else we could make it work. One idea is an AU that initially appears like the Potters just never died - but it ends up being a lot more complicated than that. There would be a lot more diversity and potentially more LGBTQ representation in this AU idea. It would be a longer project, though.

I have another AU idea where at some point after DH, thanks to Muggle technology, the Wizarding world is discovered. Chaos ensues.

So those are the things a fan wants! This fan, at least.

I don't talk too much about myself in public spaces - I could've flocked this, but then I wouldn't have been able to share it with other Snowflake participants, and that defeats the whole purpose! I will say that I am a woman in my thirties who lives in the US.

I've been involved in internet fandoms for almost 20 years now, although really, I've always been a very fannish person. I'm also a writer with a vivid imagination, which must play into it.

I decided to do a bit of a fannish twist on an intro, since this is a fannish challenge. Basically, I'm going to list a few books/shows and name characters I am most like. Behind a cut since I know fannish stuff isn't everyone's thing.

Another Harry Potter related post, although applies to all mediums and fictional universes in which one finds themselves invested.

Twelve years ago, I went through a terrible loss. I was mostly just shocked; I didn't really process it until the next morning, when I cried into my pillow. Mostly I was numb. Then sad. Then angry.

Linda (lindalupos), one of my best friends, signed onto MSN Messenger. It was like finding someone you love in the crowd following something terrible. I IMed her immediately, and all I said was "Linda..."

In response, Linda said, "I hate her."

"Her" was JK Rowling. She'd killed off our favorite character. After giving him a... very WTF-filled story arc in Deathly Hallows.

Click the cut before dawn Dawn. ;)

Ahh, Dawn. Dawn Dawn Dawn.

The short answer is that no, I don't think Dawn is the worst. But I can see where her execution would bother many fans - especially those who'd seen the show from the beginning. I'm a potential (heh) odd one out as I saw the show years after its run, and was fully spoiled for Dawn's appearance. Yet I've also heard from fans who were also spoiled that they didn't like Dawn either, and some fans who watched from the beginning loved her.

With all of the discussion surrounding immigration, I turn to fandom. In the end, writing about the odds and ends of media is one of the ways in which I come to terms with very real events. I'm focusing very specifically on the One Day at a Time Episode "Strays," and how it relates to immigration. This entry assumes the readers have seen at least the first season of ODAAT. (Also, for the record, I'm talking about the remake with the amazing Rita Moreno and Gloria Calederon Kellet.)

I'm doing the July fandom  [community profile] sunshine_challenge , and decided to follow a few leads in doing an intro post of sorts. Since it's fandom, I'll mainly focus on that. (Also, I keep most of my more personal information behind flock. I'm very old school.)

Basic Info:
I'm a thirty-something year old woman who lives in the US. Yeah, that's about all you're getting, sorry. :P In fandom terms, I'm a cross between Ben Wyatt and Luna Lovegood, with shades of Hermione Granger.  I'm a writer, nerdy but not geeky, have artsy interests but my craft is mainly writing. Otherwise, I'm more of an observer than a creator. :)

Fandom History: In case there's a prompt asking to elaborate on this, I won't ramble too much - but I will say I was in the Harry Potter fandom from the year 2000 onward, starting with the AOL HP Messageboards. (I joined the boards for adults, along with a bunch of other teen fans. They hated us there, but the kid HP forums were kinda blah.)  I was also very active in the Earth's Children fandom. I haven't really been super active in any other fandoms, if we're going to be honest. I' was involved in the Heroes fandom for the first season, Community for a few seasons, and I dabble in Buffy, Parks and Rec. I've more recently dabbled in The Good Place and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. However, I feel Parks and Rec and TGP don't really have a solid fandom per se, and the CXG fandom seems to be more of a Rachel Bloom fandom. Which is totally understandable, Rachel Bloom kicks ass, but that's not solely what I'm there for.

So yeah, these days I'm more of a dabbler, but a dabbler willing to go all in when the opportunity arises. That's why I'm participating in this challenge. :)

Fandom Interests: Mostly, I love discussion. I also love fanfiction (though I'm not big on fic that's strictly shippy/smutty without much other plot), podcasts, and I used to love fanvids but I feel fanmixes kind of replaced those.

Transformative Works Policy: I'd never heard of this until now. If someone wants to read one of my fics on a podcast, go for it, I guess? But please ask my permission first.

Other LiveWidth* Interests: Even if I'm not involved in fandoms per se, I post about a lot of nerdy things. I also do a bit of snark, but lighthearted snark more so than angry, cynical snark. I also dissect social media trends and quibbles. My real life posts tend to analyze why people do things, more so than my own life, although I do talk about my personal life as well. Sometimes. I don't know, I see LiveWidth as more of a conversation platform than a diary. I was never good at keeping diaries. I post a bit about politics, but... honestly, that's what I use Facebook and twitter for. LiveWidth is my space away from the shitfest that is my country as of late, so I limit my political ramblings.

*LiveWidth = Livejournal/Dreamwidth.

Where Can I Find Your Fanfic? Most of my fanfiction is in the fanfiction tag or the fanfiction: harry potter tag. I'll use both tags in  this post. You can also find me on Ao3. (And fanfiction.net, but please don't.)

That's about it! Welcome to my  adorkable abode!

I actually only answered three questions; I'm putting two under a cut because spoilers for all three seasons.

And that's where the spoilers end, although now we're getting into slight Parks and Rec spoilers.

Which TV show do you like better, "The Good Place" or "Parks and Recreation"?

I like both, but for very different reasons. I like that for all it's a comedy, The Good Place asks serious questions and has serious stakes. On the other hand, I kind of like the more vanilla, warm fuzziness of Parks and Rec. It's fun to rewatch. Especially if I've had a bad day.

The only problem I have with it is that certain aspects of the show are more awkward now. Tom's character in particular did not age well. Pre-#YesAllWomen, pre-#MeToo, the innocent pervert trope was a lot more bearable. I think it's cringier now because we've begun to examine how real Toms are actually problematic. So there's that. The other thing is that the time jump to 2017 in season seven is... bittersweet. I didn't even love it at the time, and I think part of me didn't love it because I KNEW it was going to end up being terribly ironic in some way. I couldn't have known how ironic, but I had reservations. I've re-watched the season, and... it's fine, I basically just have it in my head that it's a lovely parallel universe where Trump lost, but it's definitely the Greg Pikitis in the room.

It helps that Parks and Rec doesn't seem to take place in our reality anyway. Pawnee manages to change in size as the plot demands, so clearly there's some sort of parallel universe magic going on. ;)

Conversely, The Good Place actually helped me through a bad time related to current events. No spoilers, but there's a point in season three, "Jeremy Bearimy," where the characters are at an impasse. I was going through a bit of an existential crisis, and that episode was everything I needed. If I ever meet Michael Schur, I owe him all the thanks in the world.

Still, I love both shows, and they're comforting in their own way. The Good Place makes me think about how we can better our moral compasses by examining our perceptions of people and ourselves. Parks and Rec has Leslie Fucking Knope. Win-win!

The sun and  the clouds are currently at war.

Sun: Whee! I'm out!

Clouds: Nope.

Sun: Bitch?

Clouds: Yeaah... I thought so.

And it's all very 2000s.  :P Meanwhile, my willingness to leave the house depends on the  sun staying out, although I actually have to leave to do some  shopping, so I don't have much choice. But I'd rather not leave in the rain, is all I'm saying.

So while I'm here rooting for the sun, how about some Buffy stuff? I've been rewatching Buffy via a podcast (so really not rewatching, just listening to recaps and watching a few episodes that I don't remember as well), so it's been on my mind. I sadly can't find any Buffy memes, so I am pulling from Quora and other places (maybe, haven't gotten that far yet).

SPOILERS for both BtVS and Angel, although I talk about Angel less. However, what do I say pretty much spoils everything. :P

Botnik is essentially a text prediction website, that pulls from multiple sources. I like to tweak around with it because it's fun. :P

I attempted to summarize each Harry Potter book... using dialogue from Seinfeld. I inserted a few words here and there, and let Jerry, Kramer, George and Elaine take it from there.

(Spoilers for the books, of course. Albeit very very subtle, all things considered.)

I forgot I did this. tl;dr short, Botnik is basically a text predictor website, where it predicts your text based on a variety of sources. So I attempted to write I'm Not That Girl from Wicked - with lyrics from The Beatles. I inserted a few lines here and there, lettingBotnik do the rest.

Eyes - nah
Suddenly someone is speaking
Hearts in the USSR
He could be handy
But she gets annoyed

Don't submarine
Don't lose affection for people
Don't remember all my troubles seemed
He could not rob friends
But I'm from Miami

Every summer we would shout and swim
To get back home every day
But that can't have a friends' garden
When i get high with diamonds

Blithe love, no joke nah
She loves deva rocky hey
Gold hair per cent appear
That's the lonely hearts
And I'll help me
I'm now all right

Don't submarine don't go
Wishing to avoid the sun
I wasn't me back home sweet home
There's a little peace
He loves the world
I'm not cry because

I'm not completely sure how to summarize my thoughts on the season finale. But here are the ones I have, crossposted from the DW comm. SPOILERS UNDER THE CUT. Really, my reaction posts always have spoilers. I don't do spoiler free reviews or reaction posts, especially on shows like TGP. At least with a show like Parks and Rec you can be like "Leslie does a thing Ron doesn't like, and the show does a really good job, once again, of showing how they're both right AND wrong. Tom needs to chill out on Ann. Chris was overeager." TGP is more "thing that would make absolutely no sense out of context, and if it does make sense, congratulations, you've just been spoiled."

So. Here is a review so spoiled, you can smell it from Arizona.
