The Sunshine Challenge is doing a color theme this year. I thought I would relate colors to mostly fandomy things, though not all of the time, and not all Harry Potter.

Today, however, I am focusing on the reddist of them all in Harry Potter: The Weasleys. It would take too long to talk about all of them in great detail, so instead have provided some brief thoughts on each Weasley, along with many treacle tarts and a cup of hot strong love.

In your own space, talk about your fannish history. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so. Timeline, narrative, bullet points, tell us your history as a fan!

Oh boy. The deer is teal with this one. Some of it's things a lot of you've heard before, but I tried to mention things I don't think I have, and/or a little extra insight.Read more... )

Another Harry Potter related post, although applies to all mediums and fictional universes in which one finds themselves invested.

Twelve years ago, I went through a terrible loss. I was mostly just shocked; I didn't really process it until the next morning, when I cried into my pillow. Mostly I was numb. Then sad. Then angry.

Linda (lindalupos), one of my best friends, signed onto MSN Messenger. It was like finding someone you love in the crowd following something terrible. I IMed her immediately, and all I said was "Linda..."

In response, Linda said, "I hate her."

"Her" was JK Rowling. She'd killed off our favorite character. After giving him a... very WTF-filled story arc in Deathly Hallows.

Botnik is essentially a text prediction website, that pulls from multiple sources. I like to tweak around with it because it's fun. :P

I attempted to summarize each Harry Potter book... using dialogue from Seinfeld. I inserted a few words here and there, and let Jerry, Kramer, George and Elaine take it from there.

(Spoilers for the books, of course. Albeit very very subtle, all things considered.)

This turned into a sort of spontaneous Harry Potter Fan Q&A via Quora. Hey, with snowflake going on, why not? I'm leaving this entry public for the occasion. :) Spoilers for all seven books.

Anyway, prompt:

Create a fanwork. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Fanwork means anything you, a fan, creates. A new community, a rec list, a drabble or ficlet, a vid, a drawing, a meta, an icon, a critical essay, a podfic, a fanmix, a picspam, a review, a ship manifesto, a fannish cake or scarf . . . There is no limit to what the creative fannish mind can create because WE ARE SPARTA! Oh, wait. *g*

How about something completely different? A friend's been catching up with Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. What if I paired CXG songs... with various Harry Potter plotlines and/or characters?

Spoilers for Harry Potter, slight spoilers for CXG. (I'll list the season to be safe.) Obviously not an entire compendium - this is all in fun. :)

Also, just a list, no fanvids. You have my permission to make a fanvid (or many) out of this! I would myself if I had the tech skills.

So there you go! This list took... way, way longer than I thought it would.

So I have a winter project planned: I am going to write AND finish a novel-length fanfiction.

 Yeah, that's not happening. :P

However, I thought it might be fun to post some of the Harry Potter Christmas fanfic (one-shots/short stories) I've written over the years, partly for archiving purposes, partly because we could all use a little more fanfic in the world. (Especially these days...)

Behold, a "trailer." Image-only because I don't have video skills. Also, some images might be missing. :P

Okay, I don't think I can say anything else without a CUT FOR MASSIVE SPOILERS for Crimes of Grindlewald. The tl;dr is that I actually didn't hate the movie. In fact, there were parts I really liked! It's just that... none of those parts involved the main cast.

So, here we go.Read more... )

A few weeks ago, I randomly wrote Hermione's account of the first Harry Potter book... twitter style. My plan was to put it all on twitter, but that didn't quite pan out.

For the dates, I used the Harry Potter Lexicon calendar as a source, although I took my own liberties as well. I'm also pretending it's perfectly plausible for Hermione to have used twitter in 1991. This is all in fun, guys. :P

Also, I tried sticking mainly to canon events, but I did throw in some non-canon ones as well.

So, without further ado...

I remembered that for a while, I was sorting characters into Hogwarts Houses. I didn't really get very far, so I'll start over with that, and do it one show at a time. Today's Sorting is The Good Place! Serious spoilers for both seasons.

I think that's it for today! If you've seen The Good Place, how would you Sort  the characters?

I just realized the sixth Harry Potter book was released today.  (Partly because that's how nerdy I am, partly because July 16th happened to be a Red Letter day for so many of my fandom friends that I remember it.) So I thought it would be fun to read my entry from 7/16/2005. *Reads* Oh wow, a lot of rambleage about my fic. Okay, I'll just list out here what I said, but leave out the fic rambling. SPOILERS FOR HALF-BLOOD PRINCE, obviously. As well as Deathly Hallows. Spoilers for anything Harry Potter, really.

(My "current" comments are  in parentheses.)

Have my opinions changed? Besides what I said above, not really. I don't think it was a bad book, but it was definitely a transition between OoTP and DH.  I do think some things could have been written differently, but I also think there's fandom opinion mixed in there.

The following year, apparently, I made a poll about HBP. Again, huge spoilers.

So, Harry Potter people, what were your reactions when you read the book? Do you remember? Do you still stand by any of them, or do you differ a lot?  (ETA: Even if you didn't read the book when it was first released.)

From blog prompts I devised a while back. I'm actually doing a few that I have shorter answers for. These are all fandom.

What was the first fandom you were in?

Everyone might guess Harry Potter, but actually, no! I was in the Baby-Sitter's Club fandom first. I already wrote things based on books I liked, but I didn't know there was a name for it - fanfiction. I think I visited forums more than wrote fic, but I know I dabbled in both.

I was also in the Sweet Valley universe fandom. There was this site where we could co-write the characters' diaries. The thing is that it was for the new Sweet Valley high series (not Sweet Valley High, there was a new one called Sweet Valley Senior Year, but everyone wanted it to be considerably soapier than what I wanted. Also, I actually wasn't into SVH or SVSY; I'd really only read Sweet Valley Twins, and I think I was twelve or thirteen by then, so I had outgrown them and mostly still read for nostalgia purposes. (Same with BSC, actually.) So this meant I was a little out of my league. It was fun for the brief time  that it lasted, though!

What fandoms did you stick with even after the original canon closed?

I'm the kind of person who tends to dabble in and out of a lot of things,so this could be almost anything I like on some level, but I'd say Harry Potter is the best answer here. I still dabble a bit, but I don't think I've really been wholly involved for a few years. Still, it was really cool to see it evolve from 100 fics on fanfiction.net  and a few websites in 2000(!!!) to the huge fandom it became, and interesting - if, arguably, a little sad in some ways - to see it morph into "modern" fandom.  I can say with complete honesty that if it hadn't been for the Harry Potter fandom, my life would not have been the same.

I also got into Firefly and Buffyverse, but only after they'd been off of the air for a while, and I never got that into their fandoms. (Unfortunately with Firefly, I felt I kinda came in at the tail END of all the Browncoat Madness.) I was in the Earth's Children fandom (a lot of people know it by the first book, Clan of the Cave Bear) for a while after the sixth and (hopefully) last book came out, but I don't think I stuck around that long. I still sometimes visit the forums, though!  And like Harry Potter, I was in that fandom starting back in 2000.

I love filks. I also love fanvids, but alas, I cannot make fanvids.

But what if I can find a happy medium?

Feel MORE THAN free to do this! even call it .gifilk.

Today's is "The Stars Look Down" from Billy Elliot, Harry Potter style. Some images from other media will be used. (Including from the original Billy Elliot film.) Arthur Darvill is intended to be a young Arthur Weasley. Lucy Davis and the actor I am unfamiliar with are intended to be Alice and Frank Longbottom. The idea is that it takes place at the beginning of the first HP book.

(Disclaimer: I don't own any of this. Do you really think if I owned all this, I'd be making .gifilks and not drinking Mojitos on a beach somewhere?)

Note after finishing: This is more of a fanvid image style than a filk, FYI. But I did change some lyrics.

One of the prompts for the fandom snowflake challenge - which I'm not officially doing, but I have seen around - is to write about your memories of fandom. I've done SO MANY of those. So instead, I thought I would do it in a totally meta and unique way.

I went back in time to 2003, and interviewed a Harry Potter fan, known as  Fan of Fandoms Past (FFP).Last time I did this, it was to recap PoA.

(Quick non-meta note: FFP is basically a parody of teenage Harry Potter fans in 2003. Particularly Marauder fans. Particularly the ones I was friends with. And myself.)

In short, I love both series, even if they have various flaws, and even if there are some things I think one series did a little better. But as similar as they are, they are, in the end, quite different - and I don't think it's fair to criticize one against the other.

author_by_night: (cool_large)
For Deathly Hallows. And I can't really think of anything to say. :/

I guess I can ask a few questions!

1. If you've been re-reading (or have re-read recently enough to remember), what are your impressions now versus then?

2. Did you have any fan theories that came true, OR that were the exact opposite of what happened?

3. Did you write or read any fics that were eerily close to DH?

4. Anything else?

I am eventually going to do a Buffy/HP caption crossover. Or another one, I should say. Maybe over the weekend. :) And I will get to those drabbles eventually.

Since DW butchered my earlier post, I'm trying to re-post. (Take three. Sigh. I'm so sorry, guys.)

Not 100% sure why I'm being nostalgic - I've grown up, after all. I'm not the slightly naive 22 year old girl I was ten years ago. But I also think part of growing up is realizing some things will always stay with you. Besides, adulthood sucks sometimes, and one needs a retreat to simpler times.

So even if I feel I should be talking about properly adult things instead of squeeing over a book series I used to really love, screw it, my LJ/DW's going to be nostalgic today. :P

Apparently I have the day to myself, so I may concoct a few drabbles or... something later.

I said I was going to do more Harry Potter nostalgia. Well, the fact that this post is Harry Potter related is nostalgic, I suppose, but mostly it's just your everyday putting characters from other media into Hogwarts Houses. :P

Here is my assessment. Feel free to add your own input. I tried to do this humorously, as opposed to doing it as Srs Bsns, although there's also analysis to it.
