I was nervous about this finale for two reasons. First, I thought it might be sad. Second, in general, finales are hard to pull off. It's a show's (or book series', or movie series') last change to lay all the cards on the table and say "here's where the final point is, after everything." Everyone has different expectations (which may or may not align with where the creators ultimately decided to take it), everyone is a little sad, and I think everyone wants to be fulfilled just enough, yet also have it be open ended enough to leave some things to the imagination. Just not too much.

I think The Good Place, in true form, pulled it off. That's just my objective opinion, of course, and I actually avoided looking at any critical or fan responses before posting this so  you'd just get my opinion. I don't know what the fandom consensus is. But I think the finale was right.

Behind the cut are spoilers.

The 15th Snowflake Challenge is to come up with your own, possibly for others to do (as I understand it). One thing I really miss about fandom is the squee and the meta, as I've said before, so I tried to think of one way to incorporate that into a challenge. I had a few more specific ideas, then I decided to open it up just a little.

So in the comments, or on your own LJ, talk about a fandom, or several.. Here are some prompts:

- Theories and/or headcanons (whether silly or serious or a bit of both - and yes, you can totally do this for closed canons)

- Unpopular opinions (this doesn't need to be fandom specific)

- Characters you wish canon had done better by

- Characters you think the canon creators liked too much

I'd love to see what everyone comes up with!

Share your love for a trope, cliché, kink, motif, or theme

First, I gotta ask, and this isn't a criticism at all - am I the only person in fandom who doesn't care that much about sex? It would never, ever occur to me to read a fic specifically for a kink, or have a long conversation about which characters secretly want to do it, or who I'd fuck, kill, marry. Maybe that's why I'm more of a fandom outlier these days. Now, I do not judge anyone - you (universally) love what you love, and that's cool. It's just not something I personally care about.  And I rarely read kinky stuff in fic. Or R-rated fics at all, really. (Which isn't to say the media I consume is squeaky clean. Some of it's on the tamer side, but some of it  decidedly  NOT tame. Looking at you, Fifty Shades of Furrowed Brows/Earth's Children.) Anyway, I'd love to know if there are any other non-kinky buzzkills out there. ;)

As far as motifs and tropes  in ORIGINAL works go, I definitely like worlds where at least a few characters  generally get along. There *are* exceptions - for instance, I loved 30 Rock, and none of the characters are overly sympathetic or really rooting for each other. But even then, you still at least have Liz and Jack, and Tracy and Kenneth, and Dot Com and Grizz. (I would've watched a Dot Com and Grizz spinoff.) I'm not averse to characters having conflicts here and there at all, because isn't that what makes a storyline good? Conflict? Still, it's easier to relate to the characters when they're pointing their guns at a common enemy rather than each other.

I also like to see worlds where there's more than one kickass leading lady.  I feel so many works in the past especially have really just made do with one character is kickass, and everyone else is a bland or cliche female character. It's always nice to see more women sharing the spotlight.

With respect to fanworks, I love fanworks that explore backstory, missing moments, alternative POVs, minor characters, speculation on future canon events, stuff like that. Which is probably the biggest reason I'm not so into kinks - it's just not what I'm here for, usually.

So I love recap podcasts. Especially ones that aren't spoiler sensitive; while I understand why some are, there's something fun about ones that aren't because they allow themselves to talk about certain scenes or characters not only in the immediate context, but in the context of what comes later.

Two great examples are "The Real Weird Sisters" for Harry Potter, and "Still Pretty" for Buffy. Both re-read/rewatch the series, and there's a lot of very interesting insight - even though both fandoms have been around for a bazillion years now, so you'd think everything had already been said. Especially with Harry Potter. The sisters, Alice and Martha, always come up with stuff that, in my 100 re-reads of the series, I've never come up with, nor do I think I've ever heard or read before. "Still Pretty"also has some great analysis, and I imagine much of it must be original. For example, the most recent episode (as of this post) ties the themes of Maurice Sendak's Where the Wild Things Are into the season four episode of the same name, actually making sense out of the very strange episode. The only downside to "The Real Weird Sisters" is that they're almost finished the seventh book - I definitely found them late in the game. However, they also have the next movie, and I have a feeling they'll do other things, at least for a while. Maybe more Sorting Hat episodes, where they sort characters of other shows into Hogwarts Houses.

However, spoiler free is common, and some podcasts are still great, if a little restricted in what they can discuss. "Ice Town Clowns" recaps Parks and Recreation, and is halfway through the fifth season, I believe. (I'm not one for math.) "Still Dead" just finished Angel the Series, and even though I've never been the biggest fan of the show it made me look at some of my quibbles with AtS a little differently, although they also agreed with many of my other problems with the show. (Chiefly, how it treats its female characters.)  Then there's "Buffering the Vampire Slayer", which also recaps Buffy, just without spoilers. They're in season five. The hosts are also gay (they were married, and sadly divorced over the course of the podcast series, though they've remained friends), so there's a lot of discussion of the show from that vantage point, which as a heterosexual woman I appreciate.  ("Still Pretty" has some of that as well.

Then there's NBC's official "The Good Place Podcast." I like this one a lot, even if it is a little different in that the host is on the show (Marc Evan Jackson  - he plays Shawn). There's always fun outtakes from various cast and crew guests. One charming outtake was from the woman who handles the animal actors. She's clearly very ethical about it, they're all rescues and she loves the animals SO much. I wanted to have her over for tea and cookies and let her talk some more!

Also, I owe podcasts a lot for my ethic when it comes to tedious tasks. Have to do a deep clean around the house? Put on a podcast! Have to do a tedious job at work? Podcast time! I used to listen to music, but music tends to put me in a lull. Podcasts give me something to think about so I keep moving, and sometimes I'm so into it, I keep on working so I don't have to stop listening.

An admin/webmaster of a site I used to frequent (and still visited) used it as means to cope with and eventually leave an abusive relationship. It might have saved her life, actually. She's just such a great admin overall - honestly, probably one of the best admins ever, no joke. We haven't interacted a whole lot 1:1 (just here and there), but I kind of love her.

Of course , the fan community overall has been inspiring. I've been in two fandoms, one super large and one so small it was pretty much just one website in the end. There've been ups and downs, especially the Harry Potter fandom (we... definitely put the "fun" in dysfunctional), but what I see at the end of the day is the love and the power. I've talked about all that before, though (both for this challenge and in general) so I won't teal deer.

One thing that does come to mind is the time that a teacher said something very cruel to me, and an older online friend made me tell my parents. That was hugely important, because I wasn't going to, but with her being older and wiser she of course knew I had to. Overall as a teen in fandom, I had a lot of great mentors. Sure, I cringe at some of the memories (I had teenage moments), but I'm also grateful for the people who gave me guidance.

tl;dr FANDOM inspires me! Even if it's definitely been on CRAX once or twice or a million times. :)

In your own space, promote at least one canon that you adore (old, new, forever fandom). Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Well, I definitely feel that Crazy Ex-Girlfriend tends to be overlooked - and that there's actually a lot of text to be explored even within the fan community, which has a lot of interesting discourse but can also focus more on the cast (I love Rachel Bloom, but I don't want to wear her skin as a dress, you know?) or on... things I feel are interesting to talk about, but also feel there are deeper themes. But I also think people would love the show if they looked past the title. It covers feminism, mental illness, tanks the Betty and Veronica trope (thank God), friends as family... and it's a musical. Although that's probably a dealbreaker for a lot of people.

(I will note that since it does talk about mental illness very frankly, there are some triggery spots. Especially in early season three.)

The Good Place is a show I feel more people should definitely be watching, even if I'm not thrilled with the most recent episode. (More about that later, maybe once I've rewatched the episode.) While it's initially a very silly comedy, it does slowly incorporate a lot of themes about human nature and what it means to be a better person, and soon becomes more of a dark comedy. But not a "dark comedy" that's actually a drama with a few funny moments, a comedy with darker elements. (Actually, I contend that if TGP weren't a comedy, it would be an incredibly dark show. Same with Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, actually.)

Speaking of dark comedies, One Day at a Time is another show I think tends to be overlooked a bit. It's an adaptation of the 70's-80's show, with a Cuban-American family. It's incredibly progressive, including one of the very few non-binary characters on television.  It can get a little Very Special Episodey, although I think by the third season they do a good job of keeping their messages as part of the overall arc, rather than having An Episode About A Topic. And even as annoying as the VSE can get, it does mean we see a lot of important stuff, so I'll take the slight preachyness. (So we're clear, I 1000% approve of the messages, I just feel certain episodes handle it in a VSE way, rather than in a way that comes across naturally. Does that make sense?

I realize this wasn't exactly a straight answer, but those are mine, so there you have it. If you've seen these shows, let me know what you think below! If you're doing the challenge, I look forward to seeing what you came up with. Presumably a shorter list than me, I'm so Chidi - no straight one answer here. :)

In your own space, make a list — anything between one and ten things is a sweet spot, but don't feel constrained by that! - of things that you wish existed in fandom or elsewhere, or that you'd like someone to make for you. Are you dying for podfic of your writing? Do you need icons for a character that doesn't get much fanart? Is there a story you want to read? Are you looking for new canons to get into? Would you like a collaborator for a project?

1. I say this a lot so apologies to old friends who've heard this before, but I really wish there were more deep diving fan conversations. I find you get most of that on podcasts and vlogs anymore, but it's harder to interact in those cases, unless you're active in their Patreon groups.

2. More fics that are less focused specifically on romance and more on exploring the worlds and characters. I want backstory fic, what-if fic, etc.

3. As far as new canons go, I wouldn't mind a fantasy show or book series that's closer to Harry Potter and Buffy in tone. A lot of them are so grimdark, and... yes, Harry Potter and Buffy both got fairly grimdark (Buffy especially, but even Harry Potter), but there was lots of friendship goodness and positivity goodness and fun deadpan snark. I get a bit of that from The Good Place, so maybe more things like that - except more squarely focused on saving the world from The Big Bad. (After all, if The Good Place weren't a comedy, it would actually be pretty damn dark. I need to write an essay about how TGP shares some threads with Angel the Series - which, incidentally, I never liked as much as Buffy.)

4. As far as projects go, I have two Harry Potter AU ideas I would LOVE for someone to write, because I don't have time. I would happily co-write or share my ideas or however else we could make it work. One idea is an AU that initially appears like the Potters just never died - but it ends up being a lot more complicated than that. There would be a lot more diversity and potentially more LGBTQ representation in this AU idea. It would be a longer project, though.

I have another AU idea where at some point after DH, thanks to Muggle technology, the Wizarding world is discovered. Chaos ensues.

So those are the things a fan wants! This fan, at least.

I don't talk too much about myself in public spaces - I could've flocked this, but then I wouldn't have been able to share it with other Snowflake participants, and that defeats the whole purpose! I will say that I am a woman in my thirties who lives in the US.

Another Harry Potter related post, although applies to all mediums and fictional universes in which one finds themselves invested.

Twelve years ago, I went through a terrible loss. I was mostly just shocked; I didn't really process it until the next morning, when I cried into my pillow. Mostly I was numb. Then sad. Then angry.

Linda (lindalupos), one of my best friends, signed onto MSN Messenger. It was like finding someone you love in the crowd following something terrible. I IMed her immediately, and all I said was "Linda..."

In response, Linda said, "I hate her."

"Her" was JK Rowling. She'd killed off our favorite character. After giving him a... very WTF-filled story arc in Deathly Hallows.

Click the cut before dawn Dawn. ;)

Ahh, Dawn. Dawn Dawn Dawn.

The short answer is that no, I don't think Dawn is the worst. But I can see where her execution would bother many fans - especially those who'd seen the show from the beginning. I'm a potential (heh) odd one out as I saw the show years after its run, and was fully spoiled for Dawn's appearance. Yet I've also heard from fans who were also spoiled that they didn't like Dawn either, and some fans who watched from the beginning loved her.

ETA: Now a public post, just as a heads up.

In my last entry (like half an hour ago), I posted that people often complain that the new internet ruined the old internet. i still feel this is unfair, but a discussion in the comments led me to realize there are things that bother me. I replied, but I also decided to copy and paste what I said. Sorry the first bit is a little choppy, it's a response so there's no real preamble. I did add something else that's not in the comment.

As much as I bitched about mods being too strict back then, thank GOD for them. Because sure, forums had trolls, but I even remember forums and LJ communities without much - if any - mod action. They were total nightmares, because no one was really monitoring anyone or anything or establishing rules. At some forums I went to, there weren't really trolls per se, but we constantly argued over what was too off topic, if netspeak should be allowed, etc. because there was no one to say "yes, this has to be so" or "no, this is unimportant." You know?

And now the entire internet is basically a modless forum. So yeah. That is a HUGE drawback.

And speaking of mental health,  I'm worried about some of the enabling I've seen. I don't mean that people can't talk about their problems - I mean memes that practically celebrate destructive and worrying behavior. I'm also wary of both Toxic Positivity and Toxic Negativity. I don't see the latter discussed nearly as often, in fact I may have made the term up, but it's just as much a problem, where you're almost expected to be miserable on social media for anything you say to count. I DO think sometimes people are insensitive in their positivity. At the same time, there's this idea that nothing positive should go online, and... I'm sorry, that's just as destructive.

And that may branch into the lack of forums as well. I feel like the internet used to have very established places - websites, forums, whatever. So if you mostly wanted to talk about gardening, you went here. If you wanted to talk about trucks, you went there. If you wanted to join a forum for discussing personal problems, you could. So on and so forth. Now it's this mishmash of everyone and everything with no real control, and worse yet, when things get really bad, the lack of control means there's nothing anyone can do.  But even without worse case scenarios, it can be hard to find what you really want, whereas I feel like it was easier to find a true community back then.

(I also think that it's harder for some people to open up because everyone is online. Myself so very much included. I talked about work way more when I had a boss who didn't know how to use a browser.)

So yeah, I actually agree, really. I think there's elements of the internet being more universal that aren't SO bad. I will stand by that. But I also miss when it was controlled by people with a vested interest more so than platform creators who don't really care what's going on. I wish more people would use DreamWidth; it really does feel like one of the last places on the internet that that's even possible. I'd say LJ too, except that's also been a bit corrupted. I will say that Facebook does have some awesome communities, though even those are hampered by algorithims no one actually wants. Same with pages.

I still think that eventually, the Deep Web is going to be a place for community based stuff. Right now it seems to mostly be disturbing stuff - which I've never sought because no thank you - but even then, technically corporate websites only employees can access are the Deep Web. Even that site is owned by a very large tech firm, so there are some drawbacks because of that, but it's mostly independent of any larger entity. It serves its own purpose.

I'm not saying that Web 1.0 was perfect by any means. I could go on all day about crappy sites and LJ communities. Also... there were a lot of sites that enabled really bad behavior. I just feel it was better controlled, whereas now it's a bit harder. It's either so controlled you can't even see 90% of the things your friends post and 90% of your friends don't actually see your posts, or so uncontrolled that someone can tell you they're going to force you to drink bad Kool-Aid, and no one does anything about it. So that's not great. I truly don't care that people post selfies now, that's not how I used the internet but hey, whatever floats your boat. I'm uncomfortable with how easily destructive things have become, though.

I'm doing the July fandom  [community profile] sunshine_challenge , and decided to follow a few leads in doing an intro post of sorts. Since it's fandom, I'll mainly focus on that. (Also, I keep most of my more personal information behind flock. I'm very old school.)

Basic Info:
I'm a thirty-something year old woman who lives in the US. Yeah, that's about all you're getting, sorry. :P In fandom terms, I'm a cross between Ben Wyatt and Luna Lovegood, with shades of Hermione Granger.  I'm a writer, nerdy but not geeky, have artsy interests but my craft is mainly writing. Otherwise, I'm more of an observer than a creator. :)

Fandom History: In case there's a prompt asking to elaborate on this, I won't ramble too much - but I will say I was in the Harry Potter fandom from the year 2000 onward, starting with the AOL HP Messageboards. (I joined the boards for adults, along with a bunch of other teen fans. They hated us there, but the kid HP forums were kinda blah.)  I was also very active in the Earth's Children fandom. I haven't really been super active in any other fandoms, if we're going to be honest. I' was involved in the Heroes fandom for the first season, Community for a few seasons, and I dabble in Buffy, Parks and Rec. I've more recently dabbled in The Good Place and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. However, I feel Parks and Rec and TGP don't really have a solid fandom per se, and the CXG fandom seems to be more of a Rachel Bloom fandom. Which is totally understandable, Rachel Bloom kicks ass, but that's not solely what I'm there for.

So yeah, these days I'm more of a dabbler, but a dabbler willing to go all in when the opportunity arises. That's why I'm participating in this challenge. :)

Fandom Interests: Mostly, I love discussion. I also love fanfiction (though I'm not big on fic that's strictly shippy/smutty without much other plot), podcasts, and I used to love fanvids but I feel fanmixes kind of replaced those.

Transformative Works Policy: I'd never heard of this until now. If someone wants to read one of my fics on a podcast, go for it, I guess? But please ask my permission first.

Other LiveWidth* Interests: Even if I'm not involved in fandoms per se, I post about a lot of nerdy things. I also do a bit of snark, but lighthearted snark more so than angry, cynical snark. I also dissect social media trends and quibbles. My real life posts tend to analyze why people do things, more so than my own life, although I do talk about my personal life as well. Sometimes. I don't know, I see LiveWidth as more of a conversation platform than a diary. I was never good at keeping diaries. I post a bit about politics, but... honestly, that's what I use Facebook and twitter for. LiveWidth is my space away from the shitfest that is my country as of late, so I limit my political ramblings.

*LiveWidth = Livejournal/Dreamwidth.

Where Can I Find Your Fanfic? Most of my fanfiction is in the fanfiction tag or the fanfiction: harry potter tag. I'll use both tags in  this post. You can also find me on Ao3. (And fanfiction.net, but please don't.)

That's about it! Welcome to my  adorkable abode!
