The earth is definitely doomed.

I forsee a future where we only "like" things IRL, too. After all... if "likes" have hit the blogosphere, what else can we expect?

Below is a demonstration of what we might expect. With apologies to robots.

Zoe: Hey, Angelica.

Angelica: Smile.

Zoe: ... right. So, I have a problem. I think Steven is going to propose.

Angelica: Like.

Zoe: Well, no. I'm not sure I want to marry him.

Angelica: Like.

Zoe: Angie, this is serious. I think I'm in love with his brother.

Angelica: Wow.

Zoe: I mean, I haven't ever acted on it - okay, that's not true. We kissed once.

Angelica: Like.

Zoe: But I told him it could never happen. He's engaged now, right?

Angelica: Sad face.

Zoe: Well, happy face, because I saved my relationship with Steven. I think. I don't know. How can I marry him when I feel so torn?

Angelica: Sad face.

Zoe: ... maybe I should just fake my own abduction and start over in New Mexico.

Angelica: Like.

Zoe: And then I can rename myself Bonnie and hang out with a guy named Clyde.

Angelica: Like.

Zoe: ... and then we can fight off zombies in the next Zombie Apocalypse?

Angelica: Wow.

Zoe: Oh my god! I just got a text message saying the sun and the earth are dangerously close! It's like The Day After Tomorrow, except with heat, not cold!

Angelica: Angry face.

Zoe: Are you a robot?

Angelica: #notallrobots

LJ has likes now? Where? (I don't see it anyway because I always view things in my theme).

On the bottom of each entry, there's a heart. For likes.

I just heard about this... not a feature I'll be using!

I was so confused when those little hearts came up in my LJ lol, I completely missed any announcement that they would be added?

Me too. I think this may be the second time that's happened; honestly, even back when they used to announce, they'd ignore all objections half the time anyway. So maybe they've just given up on it altogether.

Would it be ironic if I hit "like"? ;)

Whatever ancient theme I'm using doesn't appear to support this "feature". I imagine I'll keep it that way. :P

Definitely not a feature I would be using.

Ugh... one more step in the Facebookization of everything. *dislike*

Earth definitely doomed.

It actually just occurred to me that they could be trying to make it more like tumblr, which has the heart symbol and "notes" (which are basically the same thing as "likes", I think). So that might be what it is. I really hope not- I don't want to wake up one morning to find out you can't even leave comments anymore. (Although I think even LJ must realize what a big part comments play. Then again, maybe not.)

LOL at your prediction/recap/thingy. Weirdly, I've often wished for a like button on comments, but not necessarily individual entries.

I actually can see them working well for comments. Interestingly, that doesn't appear to be an option.

Is the in the newer version? I went back to the old version. And my journal's not public so...

Weird. It must be a feature of the newer site schemes. I'm still forcing xColibur on my LJ, so I can't see what you're talking about.

I honestly don't see this 'like' button people are speaking of.

I hate the like button here and won't see it anyway because I view everything in my style and it's the old style. So YAY! I refuse to play Facebook here.

I already know people who will respond to things with "Sadface," even out loud. (But yes, I'm weirded out by LJ having a like option. Does every form of social media really need that?)

I hope we don't stop chatting to each other. I think "likes" are fine for comms but friends should chat and comment.
