So I've seen three episodes of the first season of Torchwood - the first two and the sixth one.

It's definitely gory, even for me (and I tend to have a lot of stomach for gory in sci fi - I can't watch a character stub their toe in a drama about a teacher who transforms lives forever, but I can watch someone being gored by a demon, go figure), but it's pretty good. I like how they introduced Torchwood through Gwen, who is less jaded than the rest.

The only thing is that I wish now more than ever that I hadn't seen Children of Earth (series three or four) first.

I hope we learn where the other characters came from - I kind of know Jack's background between being around Torchwood fans and having seen CoE, but I don't have a sense of anyone else's. Still, it is quite early.

Incidentally, I'm not watching the show because of my flist, but because my dad's become a fan out of nowhere. He never really liked Doctor Who that much (he thought it was "fine"), but he loves Torchwood. I still have yet to see Doctor Who... I feel like I saw a bit of it years and years ago, but all I remember is a phone box, and that might be because I know they use a phone box to time travel.

OMG, I can't even imagine watching Torchwood for the first time, having seen CoE first. Trust me, when you've watched the rest of the first 2 seasons, watch CoE again and prepare to be utterly horrified and heartbroken.

Just trust me on this one, when you come to the episode (I'm pretty sure it's season 1) that's about the shoes (it might even be titled "shoes", I can't remember)...skip it. It's a wasted 50 minutes of your life you'll never get back, lol. I'm sure you'll think I'm crackers and watch it anyway thinking you might be missing out on something, but if you do, you'll think back to this post and realize I'm right. A more boring and pointless hour of tv has never been filmed, I don't think. ;P

I was the same as you, vaguely remembering the vortex and a dude with an afro and my mom watching it in the dark. Why, I dunno. I can't remember how I stumbled onto "Series 1" (which in this "new who" time is when Chris Eccelston was the Doctor and is No. 9), but I watched "Rose (1x1)" and was instantly hooked. And then I was horrified that he was only going to do one series and I was trying to figure out WHY and he was SO AWESOME and David Tennant couldn't possibly be any good...and the series is just so great and you really should start with "Rose" and give it a chance. It is way 'lighter' and a bit campier at times than Torchwood, because it's written as a children's program, even though it crosses over so well.

And I just absolutely love how each episode has it's own "behind the scenes" episode as well as to how that ep was made (Doctor Who Confidential)...it's really cool to see what goes into making the episode and what the actors go through sometimes. Apparently it's almost always freezing ass cold in Cardiff when they're filming.

And seriously, you haven't lived until you've watched "Blink" in Series 3 (with David Tennant and Martha as his companion). Talk about an incredible thriller.

I do love Torchwood a lot, but I agree, sometimes it's a bit TOO much. As if writing it for the "adult" audience has taken something from it that is just so wonderfully encompassed by Doctor Who. I whole heartedly recommend you watch Dr Who, starting with Chris Eccelston and going through DT's 3.5 seasons (and you're missing out on Donna [Catherine Tate, I think], who is hands down not only the best companion, but one of the absolutely best written characters in TV history, imho.

WATCH IT!!!

;P

you didn't hear this from me, but if you need help getting download links, I can help you out.

Oh, and Jack's background is started/explained in Doctor Who, series 1 (Chris's Doctor 9) and pops up quite regularly throughout the series.

Everyone else's background in Torchwood in unique to that show and is eventually explained by those eps.

I remember watching the fourth Doctor when I was a kid, and I saw the one-off TV movie with Paul McGann, so I was excited when they brought it back. So far I've enjoyed all the Doctors Nine through Eleven.

I've enjoyed Torchwood enormously also, even with its penchant for ripping my heart from my chest and stomping on the pieces. Seriously, between the two shows I've cried more from various episodes on a more consistent basis than anything on American TV. You really do become more invested in the characters.

Oh, and you might enjoy the little Harry Potter tie-ins. Doctor Who episode 3X02 (The Shakespeare Code) has a terrific reference, and in Torchwood episode 2X03 (To the Last Man) the actor playing Tommy is Matt Lewis's older brother Anthony.

TORCHWOOD IS RAD. But the first season is kind of bad. The second one is awesome and the production values get really awesome by the time they get to the third (abelit short) series.

Doctor who can be amazing, or really confusing and boring. Depends which eppisode you watch.

but because my dad's become a fan out of nowhere

Ha! You too? My dad was GUSHING over this series. I would come over and he'd have random episodes recorded on the DVR and show them to me cold and enthuse about how brilliant every aspect of the entire episode was and how this series was the most amazing TV series written in the last 5 or so years.

However, he was a DR Who fan, though an Old school one, but never, I'd say a very active one. He was telling me one of the main reasons he had it on VHS was when apartment neighbors would play annoying music at loud volumes, he'd return the favor by playing the DR. Who theme at loud volumes.

The only thing is that I wish now more than ever that I hadn't seen Children of Earth (series three or four) first.

I've been told no matter how badly I want to see more Torchwood and how tempting it is, never to watch this, that it ruins the entire series and I'm better off never ever seeing it.

And this was from someone who wasn't any kind of shipper or anything like that, but just their critical film opinion of the quality of that mini.
