Nice demonstration! But yeah, I've always thought, "hm, Santa's a little bit of a stalker, no?"

Yeah - I mean, I don't think either is meant that way, but that is how it comes across, especially how it's sung - I've heard Baby, It's Cold Outside done so it's clear the woman is being as flirtatious as the guy, but I've also heard it done where it sounds like the woman is being hounded. Mommy Kissing Santa Clause is obviously a joke, but it's still not that innocent once you think about it. ;)

I had always assumed that Mummy Kissing Santa Claus (I'll spell it how I want to, thankyouverymuch) was about some kid seeing their parents kissing when the Dad had been dressed as Santa and not realising what was going on.

The Japanese version totally ruins the ambiguity of that song. In the English version it COULD have been the kid's dad doing some kind of roleplay with his/her mum in a Santa suit (I think I may have to vote for this song now, cause the images, they ain't pretty!), but it could also have been about the kid's mum cheating on his/her dad with Santa. But in the Japanese version it outright says "But this Santa was Dad", and it has bugged me ever since I heard it. (But the fact that they picked the roleplay scenario means that the Japanese have dirtier minds than they let on, I guess? :P)

I dunno that I'd call any of those Christmas Carols, but then I only know two, and they're just pop songs with a Christmas theme.

The only version I've ever heard of 'Baby it's Cold Outside' basically sounds like an attmept at date rape to me. She's trying to leave and he's all no no here drink MORE, and I'm all OMG WTF *flail*

The woman in the version I always hear never sounds flity. She sounds like she really wants to go and the guys sounds like those creepy people in bars who hit on you. I know what they are going for, but it just never comes of like that to me in the version I always hear.

Santa Baby is creepy for it's sheer perversion of the point of Christmas, but . . the older version sounds cute and I always have visions of Narcissa singing this to Lucius ^^;;

Yeah, that's a shame - the first time I heard it, it wasn't like that at all - the woman sounded like she knew exactly what was going on, and wanted to have as much fun with it as she could. But yeah, another sounded as you said, like a poor woman just trying to get home.

Oh God, you know, you're right. Or Bellatrix - "Voldy Baby..."

Am not going to be able to listen to that song without laughing again this season. :D

Yes, this. I've heard version with Doris Day and Bing Crosby (is that right?) and Day sounded quite flirtatious in it, so I think it's really a matter of how it's sung. It was written in a time were it was taboo for a woman to actively pursue sex, so coyness would have been one of the ways to get it anyway.

I dunno if it'd count as creepy, but for pure morbidity, I'd have to go with Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer. Though it probably could be creepy if you think about it...Santa's roaming the world, mowing down old ladies, and doesn't even look around to find out where she came from? At the very least, its hit and run and manslaughter. Nice gift for the family, Santa.

Well none of them strike me as carols that could be sung by a fire, you know.

I think it sort of depends on who is singing the song. I have a version of Baby It's Cold Outside and it is rather sweet. Other versions are not so. The song was written in the 50's so it may explain some of its flavor.

I have always loved Eartha Kitt's version of Santa Baby, growls and all. I have laughed that no Santa in the world would be able to ignore the sultry Kitt's Christmas list.

The more I consider, the more I lean toward Santa Claus is coming to town.

Andy Williams does a version of Mommy Kissing Santa Claus where the reindeer come in and start to dance, and it's pretty clear that the kid is lost in some dream world before Christmas where Santa is really "Dad".

And Baby It's Cold Outside really is a product of the time period it was written, and when perfomed right is just plain fun. And Eartha Kitt's Santa Baby is just plain awesome. Both of those songs are great for a snowy night by the fire with your signifigant other.

The school my kids used to go to had an annual winter choral concert which invariably featured some cute barely-preteen girl singing a solo of Santa Baby. For that extra creep factor beyond what's already in the song.
