This isn't always even just fandom! Often they'll pop up on facebook articles that mention Harry Potter. I guess that kind of counts as fandom, but they're not necessarily fandom people. (Actually, sometimes that adds to the arguing - someone who is clearly a casual fan will say something that shows they mixed up movie and book canon or just don't remember much canon, and they'll get jumped on by obsessive fans. Yikes!)

That's very true -- even in non-fandom areas, people get jumped on for things, but still... somehow, no matter what fandom, things tend to escalate rather quickly o.O

Ha! Oh god, that would be another post altogether. :P Although I don't think comments really have HP ship wars anymore? Sometimes you get a little snark about certain ones but where I've been it's generally pretty "ship and let ship."

(Although maybe not on tumblr. I don't really do tumblr, so I wouldn't really know.)

Eh, it depends where you go, this is true. I love HP, but my (limited) experience with the fandom (outside of LJ anyway) has been . . . weird. I try to keep it simple.

How recent was this? It definitely used to be the case, big time. I think tumblr's can get like that... LJ, I dunno.

But I'm also talking less about Harry Potter fandom spaces and more multifandom spaces, as well as spaces that aren't fandom related at all, where Harry Potter's brought up. For instance, I don't know if you read fandomsecrets, but if someone mentions Harry Potter there, that's pretty much the response you get. ("Pssh, Harry Potter Harry Schmotter." "SHE KILLED MY FAVORITE CHARACTERS!" etc.) Or those articles on facebook that "tag" the Harry Potter interest.
