Yikes.

What gets me is the part about one of the kids randomly throwing coke at  the NO ones.

What is it with some people? It's like the stories you hear about kids dying of leukemia or AIDS being teased. Is disaster funny? And how do these kids live with themselves later in life?

It just bugs me.  (Granted, this was also the topic that inspired a fic I wrote months ago).

That type of behavior is digusting. I can honestly say that I'm 87% certain that nothing like that would ever happen at my high school, thankfully. Unfortunately, there are some people that are incredibly immature; however, even the most immature people I know would never have started a fight with people in that situation.

It doesn't sound like it was a "kick the NO people when they're down" thing so much as one of those weird turf protection things that you sometimes get with adolescents. The school's just been inundated with 200 new students; it's got to be overcrowded, and some of the old students might resent all the attention the new students are getting or something. I don't know anything about the relationship between the two cities or what their stereotypes of each other are; that could also come into play. (I could see, say, my rural WNY high school responding in exactly that way to a knot of kids from New York City.)

That said, it's still disgusting behavior.

I'm rather surprised with what the spokesperson said, actually. He's just emphasised the line between the NO kids and the local students. If I were him, I'd say, "No matter what the reason, that kind of behavior is not allowed in this school" and left it at that.

I'd like to know how the fight started. People don't randomly through pop cans at one another.

The students are from different regions and social and political areas. The people who were evacuated from New Orleans like that were from some of the poorer areas. Texas... is different than New Orleans. Where do you live? I spent two years in a high school in the south and there were fights every week about the stupidest reasons, okay not even for ANY reasons. And kids that come from any type of struggling community, be it in a NYC ghetto-ish area (been there) or a swamp new orleans have their own way of acting that is very different than other areas. Seriously. The Texas kids are probably not used to those types of kids. There could have been some issues before the throwing of the coke can that aggrivated the problem, or the kids in question could just be the type that are loose. There are kids like that in every school system. I don't think that the throwing of the coke can was random at all. No way. It was either an accident, or done purposefully. Grudges. Resentment. Dislike.

I was gonna say I didn't understand why the New Orleans kids had to go to a disciplinary school - does anyone know what they've been through?? - but perhaps they were partially to blame for something and that spokesperson just didn't mention it.

My first thought was the "turf" thing, too. If it was whites against whites, then, yeah, the Texas kids were probably just some dumb jerks who weren't thinking straight. But if it was [Texas] whites against [New Orleans] blacks, then there could have been racial issues involved as well (and in that case, I still wouldn't understand why the NO kids needed a disciplinary school).

Either way, I still initially pin the blame on the Texans. Hope this post made sense, 'cause it did in my head.
