Fandom: The good stuff

You know, I wank the HP fandom a lot, as do others. It's not hard - this fandom sometimes asks for it. But there's at least one thing that keeps me in it: the sense of community.

When I first entered fandom, friendships were harder to find. You'd get a site, and/or clique, and find a handful of friends. Well, if their interests changed fandomwise, you'd suddenly stop hearing from them. And it wouldn't be over time - all of a sudden, they'd just stop answering your IMs and stuff.

Also, authors - big name or not - tended to stick to themselves. People think it's bad now... well, maybe it is, but it was worse then. I remember telling people I liked their fics, only to get very "go away now"-type replies.

Now, probably partially due to LJ and stuff, there's more identity. People don't just post a few fics, a few posts on the site forum, and then pack their bags as soon as they've decided to move on, and drop people they met simply because "I'm over that site/ship/group" unless there's a good reason. (And there sometimes is). And authors aren't scared to acknowledge their readers... more seem to realize that it's not like they're being asked to start emailing some readers the chapters ahead of posting time.

So, yeah... just my thoughts. Fandom isn't all wanky. :)
