The story of the LJer who pretended her cat was set on fire made me think of another story I read, that's even more twisted.

The sad thing is, though, that this happens online;  I've definitely caught people in lies - sometimes really sick ones.

Wish people wouldn't do that. :(

The really sad thing is that there are people, and animals, who DO need help, and it's hoaxes and con artists like these who make people cynical and cause those who do need help to lose out. :(

Wow, what some people will do for attention!

That is horrible. I can't believe people would lie about something so serious. I have a teenage friend in remission from cancer. I think it's an insult to her and all others with cancer to pull such a hoax.

*Hugs* My Mom had it, so yeah, I know the feeling. It IS an insult.

The sad thing is that people do that in real life. Being online really doesn't have much to do with it, it just makes it easier to claim something without proof. Such is the nature of people, people want attention or sympathy or whatever else and they'll do stupid or childish or just weird things to get it. Some just go crazily overboard with it.

Yeah, good point.

Interesting coincidence: I read about "the Kaycee Nicole case" on GAFF (a discussionboard on awful fanfiction) just a few days ago.
I honestly don't understand why people would really do this. Even *my* sense of humor isn't that twisted...
