So, I have a Harry Potter confession to make - besides the fact that I'm still into the books and sometimes read/write fanfic. :P I don't know, once I like something it either goes away quickly or sticks forever. There doesn't seem to be much in between for whatever reason. There's still a part of me that loves books I read or shows I watched as a kid. Fortunately including adult ones, like Keeping Up Appearances.
But back to Harry Potter. So, as some of you know, I used to be a huge Marauder/MWPP fan. I honestly fantasized about marrying teen!Remus Lupin. I read MWPP fic, read MWPP fic, used Kristen Bell's (I think that was her name) fanart as my vision for them, I RP'd Marauder stuff... looking back it was a little insane.
Now, however, even though I'm still interested in the individual characters... I have absolutely no desire to read anything Marauder related. I think some of it is that I just got tired of the same things over and over, some of it is that I realized they were basically effed up as hell... it's just interesting how that changed, even though a lot of things didn't.
Of course, some of it might be maturity, too. I think as a teenager/young person, I liked the idea of having a map of my school and friends who were there no matter what and stuff. And even though Marauder fics could be really dark, they were in some ways lighter than the books, because at that point they weren't directly fighting the forces of evil. Not that I liked all Marauder fics - a lot had OCs with Sirius or Remus that didn't feel either British or, well, even close to canon (some were well done, but others had names like Tiffany and wore American Eagle... yeah), but they were escapism, I guess.
I used to say I never wanted JK Rowling to write a book about them because they'd ruin so many fic ideas. :P Now I just don't care. I'd rather read about characters we never knew anything about, or the founding of Hogwarts, or something.
Right now I'm actually working on a fic, and Remus is a character. But it's post-MWPP era (literally right after the first war ends), and I'm trying to focus less on his MWPP days and more on the rest of his character. Plus, it's an ensemble, so he's not the only one. I tried writing him remembering his MWPP days though, and it was actually boring trying to. I think I may have fallen asleep.
As much as I hated Bye Bye Birdie with a passion (I watched the movie with a friend the other dayfor the first time, thinking if Mad Men referenced it it had to be somewhat good - I nearly threw up 87 different times from the overkill sweetness), perhaps it is a bit like the song at the very end. :P
The same is true of pairings, too. I used to be a huge Remus/Tonks shipper. Now... getting me to read a R/T fic is hard. I read a really good one a while back, but it took place during OoTP and had everything I originally loved about the ship. There was no "and also, I can kill you with my emo brain" wangst, no annoying "should I stay or leave" angst, etc etc. It was nice. Of course, that's the issue I've found I have with most Dark Creature/Normal(ish) Person pairings. It's like Buffy and Angel - I actually did like them until I realized how annoyingly EMO they are. God. Angel, stop moping around Buffy like a sad puppy and fight Wolfram and Hart or visit Lorne or something. After watching AtS, I can't take Angel in Buffy seriously anymore. He seems so misplaced. Maybe I'll call him McBroody when I rewatch.
I really need new fandoms.

Date: 2012-09-09 10:31 am (UTC)I have a list of TV shows that you might be interested in! :D From Alias, Battlestar Galactica, Black Books, Castle and Chuck to Doctor Who, Fringe, Primeval, and the X-Files. Respectively, my fandoms are: Sydney/Michael (although, I did go through a Sydney/Sark phase), Helo/Athena and Starbuck/Sam or Apollo, [no fandom, it's just a hilarious series and everyone who likes British humour should watch it], early Castle/Beckett, Chuck/Sara, Nine or Ten/Rose and Eleven/River, Olivia/Peter, Connor/Abby, and Mulder/Scully. ^_^
I have a lot of TVonDVD. Not that you can tell.
Also, re: BtVS, I have my own confession: I hate Buffy. She is so annoying and I kind of want to slap her, and I'm only up to the third season. That's bad, right? o_O

Date: 2012-09-09 11:51 am (UTC)I'm fine on shows themselves - it's more of a matter to have a place to really discuss them, or books, or movies, you know? And maybe that's the other thing. A lot of fandoms seem to be more about shipping, and that's not really what I want out of a fandom. I know HP fandom was a huge exception in terms of how big it was and how much there was to it, but surely there's some that are close? I just want some balance between shipping and discussion and I want fanfic that has ships, but is more than just that ship. Although admittedly with Castle that's a bit hard to do.

A lot of people don't like Buffy. I kind of figure though that sometimes you really can't like the hero, because if they were 100% likable they couldn't make a lot of hard choices. Then again, even though I like Willow as a character, I don't like her that much as a person, whereas apparently other fans do until a certain season where she becomes... not that nice a person. She just seems so passive aggressive to me.

Date: 2012-09-13 10:58 am (UTC)Ah yeah, I know that feeling. Not everyone I know likes the same things as me, so it's hard to geek out over them without getting a o_O type of response. Have you tried any LJ communities or fan sites? A lot now have Facebook pages too, so that might be something? :)
I'm fine with Buffy's character being a strong butt-kicking female, but on the other hand she's so emo and sappy and 'Angel, why won't you love me?!', and that makes me not want to watch the show for long periods of time. I like Willow and her character's development (I already know most of the things that happen to make her 'not nice'). The passive aggressive doesn't really bother me, but then there's also times where I just want to shake her and tell her to 'fess up already, because seriouslyyyyyyy, there is no one on the planet that doesn't know what she's feeling!!! Not that I like her with Xander anyway.
I'm actually looking forward to Willow being the bad guy, because I think it'll be so interesting to see how the characters all respond to her being the Big Bad this time around! :)

Date: 2012-09-13 11:49 am (UTC)Yeah, but they actually seem to be just O_o about actual discussion these days, for whatever reason. I made the mistake of asking why there was no discussion at one, and the response was basically "um wtf would we talk about?" I find a lot of communities are much more based around the actors or whatnot, as opposed to being fannish. Even TV discussion posts will even be void of comments, or if it's a reaction post, nobody will say anything once the episode is over. Other places are so cynical, and I kind of get the feeling it's "cool" to hate all of the characters and stuff.
Yeah, Willow can act a little "me me me", too. But maybe it does help if you know what's going to happen beforehand - I can see if you're still used to Willow being relatively nicer compared to the rest of the characters (and really, she is) how her going evil would throw fans off. It's how I felt about certain characters in other stuff I'd followed all along until I sat back and went, "waiiit a minute, were they ever really that good/nice/calm/whatever?"

Date: 2012-09-18 12:40 pm (UTC)... Umm, I don't know... the show itself?! /sarcasm.
There's a difference between fangirling over actors and not being able to discuss the show. Doesn't really seem worth watching it if you can't even do that!!
Yeah, I suppose Willow can be that way. I'm still in the 'she's so nice' part of the series! XD But I could see how her going evil would definitely throw people off. I've read too many Willow/Spike fanfics, so I'm already seeing bits of her not being that good/nice/calm. I prefer it. Which is probably why I like Vamp!Willow in The Wish a heck of a lot! :D

Date: 2012-11-04 12:33 am (UTC)I think people are getting dumber. I work in a library, and I swear the questions are getting even stupider every week. I had someone ask me where the books were. In a LIBRARY. *head!desk*
Uh, yeah, because that wasn't obvious. *rolls eyes*
Searching for depth in a Pepsi commercial sounds like fun, actually. Especially if it was a really ridiculous ad. XD
