Or do people who have Yahoo Messenger never actually use it - myself included?

I think it must be a cycle or something. I don't use it a lot because none of my contacts there are ever on, and then I get people telling me "I don't use it because none of my contacts are ever on."

I don't mind yahoo, really... in some ways, I like it better than AIM and as much as MSN, possibly a little more.

I use it and in fact, I'm on right now. :)

There are lots of different messaging things, aren't there? I've heard of: IM, AIM, Y!M, MSN ... and some others, probably. Which are better? How do you use them?

Its sort of hard to explain... you just download them from their respecctable sites, and figure it out. Its not too hard.

You download the instant messaging program of your choice (this depends on what the majority of your friends have, and if you want extra things, such as email alerts). Then you install it and sign up with a screenname. Then you have to add buddies who use the same program by adding their screenname. And then, if they are on and you are on, you can talk to each other.

I've tried AIM, YIM, MSN and ICQ and Trillion, which is a program that logs you into ALL of the other messaging programs with one program. If you have a Yahoo screenanme, I suggest trying that one first as you can start a small client without downloading anything. I use AIM the most now. If you want to try an internet messaging program out you are more than welcome to message me to try it out. :) My AIM is JanAQ3 and my yahoo is my yahoo e-mail, (Jan_AQ3).

I use when I run GAIM. Otherwise, meh, no. I also use GAIM sometimes for loading MSN and ICQ.

But I'm also currently logged on on four AIM nicks.

I think Yahoo Messenger hates me... but yet I use it. No one's ever on, though.

I prefer MSN's icon and messaging format, but I like AIM because of the away messages and I have 90-odd people on my buddy list, as compared to MSN and Yahoo where I only have 15-30.

Which I find entirely weird, I have like 100 people on my MSN (I talk to about 10 of them maybe) and I only have 26 on AIM (whom are all Quillers)

It must be a Canada thing or something. Everyone seems to use AIM here.

Perhaps that's because it's America Online ;)

Well, AIM is from AOL; AOL = America Online. So... yeah.

But its still possible to get it; and there's AOL for Brits and Canadians, etc.

Mhmm. I had AIM mostly for people I know through fansites and LJ -- but everyone I actually kow uses msn... I have around 100 on msn, mostly all friends and people from school. Half the people here haven't heard of AIM, and the other half say... so why do you use that? lol

Yeah, I don't really use it either. Then again, I don't really use AIM or MSN that much. I guess I have to be in the mood to IM, but frequently when I'm online I'm reading fanfiction or writing e-mails/lj updates. *shrugs* That's just me, though.

I never really use it either. I think it's because I used AIM first and most of my friends use it as well. I suppose old habits just die hard.

How odd. Everyone *I* talk to is only *ever* on Y!M. I've stopped logging into AIM and MSN completely because no one ever uses it.

Of course, the best idea is to get a program like Trillian (http://www.ceruleanstudios.com/) which allows you to login to Y!M, AIM, MSN, and ICQ all at the same time, all in the same program. Then it doesn't matter who's on which program-- you're on them all. :)

I primarily use Y!im because it tells me when I have email, and I find it very usefull to have four alerts plus a whoosh sound when I get mail, because otherwise, no joke, I won't notice that I have new mail until weeks later. But usually I am invisible on YIM, because that's how it usually logs me in, and I always forget to uninvisible myself.
