I like how you called this season a tide turner, because I thought it was a season of transition. Everyone is going through major changes in their lives, but the most important, and probably most subtle, of those transitions were the ones of the partners of SCDP.
We're all familiar with the stages of life represented by maiden, mother, and crone. You can easily fit the partners in these same roles. Don is the maiden, Roger the mother, and Burt the crone. Burt has had a lesser role for a while and I think Roger is starting to move into his spot while Don is transitioning into the mother role. The question is who will be the new maiden - the up-and-comer who is connected to the world the way Don used to be?
This transition has seemed to be particularly difficult for Don. He's having a hard time understanding the music of the day and the preferences of his clients. He stomped on the work of Ginsburg to prove he still "had it." He uses Megan to tap into the beat of the day. One of the most striking moments is when the elevator doors open and he stares into the empty elevator shaft. It felt like a visual representation of his feelings of irrelevancy. He's at the top of his game and the only way to go is down.
I don't watch, but I have comments. 1. I'm glad some AMC shows earned nominations. I hope even more DISH customers contact the company and complain. 2. I'm ticked off The Walking Dead didn't earn a single 'talent' nomination (they did earn some sound and makeup.) There was some buzz that two actors might receive nominations. I don't know if there was too much talent to go around this past season, or the series is getting stiffed because of the subject material.
