That depends. If it was the sort of insult with a threat between the lines or even just a downright threat, I might consider calling the police or at least walking very quickly towards a secure area. If it was "you're ugly", I let it go. Either way it's usually best not to react - that can make things worse. I'm not saying you should let people walk all over you, but if you don't know someone, you have no clue what they're capable of.

I have a girlfriend who always responds to shit from other random people with 'Have you considered accepting the Lord Jesus Christ as your personal saviour?'

It seriously freaks everyone out, which never fails to cheer her up. That she is an atheist just makes it more fun.
