Halloween Survey
Oct. 30th, 2009 04:07 pmSo sorry I haven't responded to comments... my computer cord died, and in general things around here have been stressful. I've been reading though, promise. The annoying thing is I was hoping to finish/post a fic, but I need the concentration I can't get between some stress around here and using the family computer downstairs.
That aside, I did think it'd be fun to host a little award game. I actually had really big plans for you guys, but unfortunately I didn't get my arse in gear on time. :( However, I may be able to brew a little something assuming I am able to get a new cord/better computer soon.
In the meantime, I present the Orange Lantern Awards Nomination.
Tell me, in the comments:
1. Best fantasy/sci fi film.
2. Best horror film.
3. Best fantasy/sci fi novel
4. Best horror novel.
5. Best fantasy/sci fi show.
6. Best horror show.
7. Best werewolf.
8. Best vampire.
9. Best ghost.
10. Best poltergeist.
11. Best Doll o'Doom.
12. Best "other" creature.
13. You really think I'm giving an option for 13??
14. Best witch (or variation of, depending on your fantasy of choice.)
15 Best wizard/warlock (or variation of, depending on your fantasy of choice.)
16. Best team of sleuths.
17. Best Evil Object.
18. Best villain.
19. Best hero.
20. Best Halloween treat ever received.
21. Best Halloween costume ever seen.
22. Best fantasy/sci fi play (musicals count).
23. Best horror play (musicals count).
You don't have to answer all of these. You can also submit more than one answer - this isn't a "srs bzns" survey, after all. However, try and keep to one or two options.
Also, feel free to share this with your friends! The more, the merrier!

Date: 2009-10-30 08:56 pm (UTC)2. Best horror film: Either Coppola's "Dracula" or "Identity". I'd say Se7en, except it's more of a thriller than a horror.
3. Best fantasy/sci fi novel: I have to go with the Harry Potter series. The amount of JOY it still brings me makes them my favorite ever.
4. Best horror novel: Is it weird if I say the Goosebumps? Haha. I still remember when those freaked the hell out of me.
5. Best fantasy/sci fi show: Firefly.
7. Best werewolf: Remus Lupin. Bookwise.
8. Best vampire: Spike. William the Bloody wins fo sho.
9. Best ghost: ....Spike? I actually don't have many...ghost favorites. I'd say either Spike or Scrooge's future!Ghost.
10. Best poltergeist: PEEVES!
12. Best "other" creature: Thestral. OMG I WANT ONE. They're so horrifyingly beautiful.
13. You really think I'm giving an option for 13?? Superstitious much? lol.
14. Best witch (or variation of, depending on your fantasy of choice.): Elphaba
15 Best wizard/warlock (or variation of, depending on your fantasy of choice.) Severus Snape. Is. A. BAMF.
17. Best Evil Object: Horcrux. I mean come on! You have to kill someone and then your split apart your soul? That's just a whole different kind of creepy.
18. Best villain: The Alliance. I think just because they're so overbearingly powerful it feels like there would never be any chance against them. Oh, or the Rossum Corporation. Because they're just truly evil and have no morals.
19. Best hero: The Big Damn Heroes!
20. Best Halloween treat ever received: Mmm, caramel apple cider from the neighbor on a cold cold night after trick or treating for hours.
21. Best Halloween costume ever seen: Castle's on last weeks episode. He was Malcolm Reynolds! Either that or the seriously parody-like "Edward Cullen" - Crazyasshair!Wig, white face cream, pleather jacket, and glitter all over the face. Hehehehe. (Apple optional)
22. Best fantasy/sci fi play (musicals count): Wicked, duh.
23. Best horror play (musicals count): Hmm. Does Phantom count?

Date: 2009-10-30 09:26 pm (UTC)Pan's Labyrinth. It's the only movie I have ever seen that is deep, but not pretentious.
2. Best horror film.
I guess Pan's Labyrinth generally isn't counted as horror, so... Aliens. Of all the horror films I've seen, its characters are easily the best.
3. Best fantasy/sci fi novel
You could never, never make me choose for good. However, at the moment I'm in a fairly serious-business mood, so I'll arbitrarily go with A Game of Thrones. Heart-rendingly tragic and intricate.
4. Best horror novel.
The only straight-up horror novel I've ever read is Carrie, so that wins by default.
5. Best fantasy/sci fi show.
I'm not sure if Firefly is strictly sci-fi, but if not, then the winner is Dollhouse, so yeah, Whedon kicks ass.
6. Best horror show.
Never seen any.
7. Best werewolf.
I was primed to say Oz, but come on, could it be anyone but the guy in my av?
8. Best vampire.
I'm only in the middle of Interview, but I'll tentatively go with Louis. I'd only seen pale imitations of the character until now. This is the pinnacle of the angsty regretful vampire - and even season-two Spike gets beaten out by that.
9. Best ghost.
Okay, in the Halloween spirit, it has to be the Bloody Baron.
10. Best poltergeist.
Only read about one...
11. Best Doll o'Doom.
There's one lurking just below my typing brain, but it must have been pretty long ago.
12. Best "other" creature.
Got nothing, sorry.
14. Best witch (or variation of, depending on your fantasy of choice.)
Hmmm... Toph (Avatar: the Last Airbender) for creative use of magical powers; McGonagall for kickass character.
15 Best wizard/warlock (or variation of, depending on your fantasy of choice.)
I'm hard-pressed to choose between the contenders in Harry Potter alone...
16. Best team of sleuths.
A three-puppet salute to you! One of these days, you will know what I meant by that.
17. Best Evil Object.
Can't beat the One Ring.
18. Best villain.
Light Yagami (Death Note). He has the master plans all the other villains only wish they had. Well, him and that fellow with the big revelation at the end of A Storm of Swords, but whatever the spoilery guy is enacting with his plan, it could quite probably have come about without making things as convoluted as he did.
19. Best hero.
Too bad we're confining this to speculative fiction, or I'd say Jean Valjean or Kenzou Tenma (Monster). As it is... Samwise Gamgee.
20. Best Halloween treat ever received.
I've never got anything really original, but honestly? Dubble Bubble and Bit O' Honey. I know everyone else hates those, so you may drop them off at my place.
21. Best Halloween costume ever seen.
There was this truly epic werewolf. She used an actual taxidermized wolf's head.
22. Best fantasy/sci fi play (musicals count).
Into the Woods by Stephen Sondheim. It's one of the few I've seen, but it is epic. Oh, and Amy, you seriously have to hear the finale, "Children Will Listen". It's the most Deathly Hallows thing ever.
23. Best horror play (musicals count).
Sweeney Todd. Sweeney Todd. Sweeney Todd.
Yeah, it was actually pretty fun to get through that behemoth.

Date: 2009-10-31 12:08 pm (UTC)I was primed to say Oz, but come on, could it be anyone but the guy in my av?
Wait, that's Remus? I always thought it was Sirius.
you seriously have to hear the finale, "Children Will Listen". It's the most Deathly Hallows thing ever.
Will do!
I'm not sure if Firefly is strictly sci-fi
It is, although in some ways it kind of seems to sniff its nose at sci fi like Star Trek. Where Star Trek was all about protecting the Federation of Planets, the main characters in Firefly don't even like the current government. Two of them were even a war over the fact. And then there's that wonderful line with Simon seeing a "real alien" and declaring it's a cow fetus. So yeah, I think in a lot of ways it rejects more traditional sci fi, but it's still sci fi.

7. Best werewolf.
Remus Lupin

Nearly Headless Nick

Why not? How about "Best use of the number 13"?
14. Best witch (or variation of, depending on your fantasy of choice.)

15 Best wizard/warlock (or variation of, depending on your fantasy of choice.)
Richard Rahl
16. Best team of sleuths.
Scooby Gang (original or Buffy? you decide!)
17. Best Evil Object.
Slytherin's Locket horcrux
18. Best villain.
Does Grand Admiral Thrawn really count as a "villain"? If so, him. If not...Kronos
19. Best hero.
Percy Jackson. He's defined as a hero.
21. Best Halloween costume ever seen.
Captain Obvious--complete with superhero outfit and a sidekick that kept saying "Thank you, Captain Obvious"

10. Best poltergeist. The poltergeist from 'The Headless Cupid.'
11. Best Doll o'Doom. The doll of the Other Mother from Coraline.
12. Best "other" creature. Mogget is the best Mogget. (The Old Kingdom)
13.Friday the 13th is Donald Duck's birthday.
14. Best witch (or variation of, depending on your fantasy of choice.) Granny Weatherwax and Nanny Ogg are in a tight tie. However, for variation, I submit Sabriel for best Abhorsen. (Discworld, Old Kingdom)
17. Best Evil Object. The Silver Guillotine from The Golden Compass.
22. Best fantasy/sci fi play (musicals count). Return to the Forbidden Planet! But, that failing, Wicked. Also, Peter Pan is quite good.
23. Best horror play (musicals count). Sweeney Todd.
I propose number 24. Best object to combat evil:
The silver and mahogany bells of the Abhorsen (The Old Kingdom.) And Mightily Oats' Ax (Discworld.)

Date: 2009-10-31 09:10 pm (UTC)The Labyrinth.
2. Best horror film.
The Bad Seed. No blood or violence shown, but it is creepy as Hell
3. Best fantasy/sci fi novel.
Not sure if its true fantasy, but its certainly not horror: The strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde
4. Best horror novel.
Again, the Bad seed. As is usual, the book is much better than the movie. The end is completely different, and way creepier.
5. Best fantasy/sci fi show.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer
6. Best horror show.
SUPERNATURAL
7. Best werewolf.
Fenrir Greyback
8. Best vampire.

12. Best "other" creature.
Harvey the Pooka
13. You really think I'm giving an option for 13?? Yes. In fact, I demand an option for 13!
14. Best witch (or variation of, depending on your fantasy of choice.)
Elphaba
15 Best wizard/warlock (or variation of, depending on your fantasy of choice.)
Voldemort
16. Best team of sleuths.
Sam and Dean Winchester, Bobby Singer, and Castiel. The boys do fine on their own, but combined with Bobby and Cas, they can even save the world (or so we hope, hehe)
17. Best Evil Object. The "Lucky" Rabbit's foot in supernatural. Once you lose it, hilarity ensues for those around you
18. Best villain.
Maleficent
19. Best hero.
Malcom Reynolds
20. Best Halloween treat ever received.
Since most of my treats were always candy, I'm going with the last Castle episode. Nathan Fillion as Castle as Mal. There's so much awesomeness there I'm surprised my tv didn't melt.
21. Best Halloween costume ever seen. Wasn't see, but someone my dad worked with dyed his hair, grew a goatee, and came as himself 30 years ago.
22. Best fantasy/sci fi play (musicals count).
Jekyll & Hyde
23. Best horror play (musicals count)
Sweeney Todd
