I know, it's early, and  I doubt anyone's going to see this, but I just had to say this.

The shipping meme and the pet peeves thread has rekindled an old rant - the disregarding of friendship. Sirius is an annoying pest who always interrupts Lily and James - nothing more. James is a homophobic bigot who doesn't see why Remus and Sirius really love one another. Ron is  a mad abuser that only married Hermione because his parents wanted him to. And Harry is  a Quidditch obsessed doofus everyone's tired of.

No, no, no, no, NO!

What's wrong with Hermione and  Ron being in love - and still loving Harry? What's wrong with Sirius and  James being supportive of the other's relationships? And why does Ron have to be an abuser?

I don't think friends are always automatically better - I've heard of friends being as posessive and manipulative as boyfriends/girlfriends can be. There are times where choosing the guy over a friend *is* the right choice.

However... I think there need to be more stories in general, not just fics and books but movies and songs too, that focus on the power of friendship. There can still be dating - just don't make the friend an annoying third wheel.

The power of friendship, after all, is a true love story.

but don't you know? The only way to create great, interesting conflict in a story is by bastardizing characters? :p (jk)

I still just think of those stories and think of teenage girls living out their love conquers all fantasies. One guy is evil, they're the beautiful princess, and one day their prince will come.

Sirius can be a bastard, Ron (and Harry for that matter) are doofus's. Because, practically, the only canon we have for them are of their formative years. LOL

Okay! James would never be a homophobic biggot, ever. Sirius WOULD get in between James and Lily. But, it would be in such an obnoxious endearing way that...well...it'd just be Sirius. Sirius and Remus will always make sense to me...it just works in my head that way and no one can tell me any difference. I have canon that might support it and I have canon that might refute it...its subtextual and we all know that.

Ron will marry Hermione...because he loves her. Harry will find love, it will happen. But, I think you've found the right idea with your friendship rant. Did anyone notice what JK has been writing for five books now? Its about a triad of friends. The trio, in triplicate, a threesome. They are friends. Nothing will come in the way of that, nothing.

Okay, I think I've inudated you enough with my rant.hehehe.

Much  to the fellow quiller and don't let 'em get ya down!!

Oh, I wasn't saying R/S is bad - it isn't my favorite ship, but I'll read it on occasion, and I can see some of the reasoning.

All I've got to say is that I agree. I couldn't ever imagine Lily and James just dumping Sirius because of their relationship, I'll bet that he was supporting it the whole time, and maybe even was the one to give the two that final push so that they'd actually admit what they felt. Harry, Ron and Hermione are the Wonder Trio and shall stay that way. 'Nuff said. =P

The power of friendship is one of my favorite themes in books such as HP and LotR. I know people enjoy romance and it's sweet (not to mention a bit sugary), but friendship is a wonderful thing. I suppose most people take it for granted, including the characters themselves.

If they're destroying friendship for interesting conflict, then it's been there, read that. Being creative is more refreshing (and fun) than making your plots sound like a soap opera.

Word, Amy. Word.

I *hate* fics that pair everybody up, especially when it completely kills the characters. Sigh...
