So a new Harry Potter messageboard has finally been started - The Whomping Willow. (I linked to the explanation of the name on purpose.)

It is also our hope that The Whomping Willow will also be an outlet for fanfiction writers and fanartists. There is a forum where writers and artists can discuss their hobby and hopefully seek advice from one another, as well as encourage one another to write and draw. The process of fanart/fanfiction archiving has not quite been figured out, but please note that this will be a canon-geared site.

Now, onto the application; you see, before The Whomping Willow gets started, it needs a moderating team. The reason for doing applications is so that all interest can have a fair chance of becoming a moderator. Note that even if you do not become a mod, you are still welcome to join (knowing the board may change) and/or give us your suggestions.

If you have any questions, please ask!

Part I: All About You

Fandom Name (LJ or otherwise) :

Age: (Can be an approximation)

Have you had any experience as a moderator before? Where?

What did you like and dislike about being a moderator?

Aside from moderating, how much experience have you had in online communities?

What did you like or dislike about these communities?

How would you describe yourself? List both positive and negative traits:

Have you written any fanfiction or drawn any fanart? (Response only necessary if you want to moderate Parchment, the fanfiction/fanart posting forum.)

Part II: Scenario

Please describe how you would respond to these four scenarios; you are only required to tell me how you would respond to two, although you are certainly encouraged to provide a solution to all of them. However, if you want to moderate Parchment, you are required to answer number three. Your responses can be as long or short as you want.

There is no right or wrong answer for any of these; everyone responds differently to situations.

Scenario One:

You notice that there is a new member. She has posted in Stones to Hallows.

You decide to read her post. It says:

hi im mary sue im frum florida i wanted 2 no if n e of u hav heard of a 8th buk? thx :)

Scenario Two:

Gary_Stu makes the following complaint in a post:

THIS BOARD SUCKS. Everyone sucks. You manage to make Harry Potter suck. Go die in a fire.

Scenario Three:

Maria Susanna sends you a PM saying that the reviews for her work were horrible, and she is so upset she doesn't know if she can ever post anything on the boards again.

You go to her thread, only to find that the reviews were, while mostly on the negative side, far from horrible. The posters who responded with nitpicks were gentle and polite.

Scenario Four:

You were asked to do a special project for the board with another mod. However, just as you get started, your aunt calls telling you to pack. Just great - another impromptu weekend trip! You can't get out of it for various reasons, but the mod is counting on you. It's Thursday evening, you leave Friday afternoon and come back Sunday night. The project is supposed to show up on the forums Monday morning.

Part III: Moderating The Whomping Willow

As you have seen, there are several forums to moderate! We want to make sure that you get the forums you truly want. Noting that you may get more than one forum...

List the forums you would be the most interested in moderating:

List the forums you would be the least interested in moderating:

How many forums are you comfortable moderating?

Part IV: Final Questions

What is your email address, or another way to get in touch with you?

Do you have any suggestions for The Whomping Willow?

Why do you want to moderate at The Whomping Willow?

You can either reply by email at author_by_night AT yahoo DOT com, or reply here; anonymous posting is allowed, as long as you let me know how to get back to you. Note that if you send me anything by email, I will reply to let you know I got it - this does not mean I chose you as a mod; what it means is that I got the email. After all, sometimes Yahoo likes to hide my emails. ;)

Feel free to ask me any questions!
