Everyone was correct in saying that it would be Firefly.
For those of you who don't know, Firefly is a "Space Western" that takes place about 500 years in the future. In the show, earth - or, as they call it, "earth that was", got used up - I've never been clear on how exactly, but the point is, now everyone pretty much lives on terraformed planets, and there's a blend of cultures. There is, of course, so much more to the show than that, but that would take forever to explain. :)
It had a lot of promise, but Fox handled the show quite badly. They showed the episodes completely out of order - ironically, the last episode they showed was the pilot.
But I think the show really could have gone somewhere, though admittedly it is a harder sell, as it's not one genre. Buffy and Angel fit a pretty standard fantasy arc - demons, witches, reluctant hero, that sort of thing. But Firefly is a mix of sci fi, western, and there's almost a bit of a 1984-type element as well, where people are seen as objects by the central government. It's definitely not traditional sci fi - there's no laser beams, the only alien is actually a cow fetus, and there's no space-time continium.
Still... I think it would've been doable, and I wish Fox had put more effort into making it work.
I'm really doubtful, unlike a lot of Firefly fans, that it's ever coming back, though. There might be another movie, but I don't see an actual show. Still, if it ever did come back? I'd watch it. (Though I'd prefer it if it were internet based or something, just because I can't plop myself in front of a TV at a certain time once a week. I'd forget and miss entire episodes. That's why most of the shows I watch are online or reruns...)
In the meantime, I do reccommend it. If you know Buffy or Angel, you'll know the quirky storylines... they're present here as well. It also has a lot of focus on character dynamics and relationship, also not unlike Buffy and Angel. Plus, if nothing else, there's plenty of eye candy. Oh, and if you're in the Potter fandom and a Ron/Hermione shipper... there's a ship with very similar tension, though for different reasons.
