How do you document fandom, when fandom's getting more like fanfiction each day?

ETA: Play on a song from Rent. Just for the uninformed.

Off Topic... Sort of...

I have a student who is really into the Harry Potter and A Series of Unfortunate Events books, however I just learned that he goes on the internet and memorizes the plots of the books so he doesn't *actually* have to read them!

Are there any - more obscure/harder to find on the internet books in this genre you could recommend?

Wow... that's not good. Honestly, fanfic is rarely exactly like the books anyway, so he shouldn't get away with it for too long.

I don't think there really are more obscure books - the internet has everything. But I'll think about it, andget back to you. :)

I think that is how/why he eventually got caught doing it :)

But, thanks!

Oh, and I guess I should mention. I don't think he is reading fanfic. I think he is going to places that tell him - in chapter one X happens etc.

My mentor has suggested photocopying chapters out of books without informing him of the title, and just putting these photocopied chapters in his study hall binder every day. So perhaps I could do this with a less well known book. Right now he is 'reading' Harry Potter book 6. I will let him finish, and then switch to the photocopies :)
