Steve Irwin is dead.

I know that's a popular urban legend - I didn't believe it at first either, since someone linked to a site that had a few odd headlines, and I've heard of his death before. But... it's on CNN. They don't post urban legends.

I still really can't believe it. It's not that I was a huge fan of his, though I did admire his devotion to animals... it's just... shocking. A legend, a wonderful man, dead doing the thing he loved.

Though maybe that's the way to look at it. It's still tragic, though!

That was...abrupt. I probably wouldn't have heard of it if I hadn't read your post.

Goodness gracious, that was bit of a shock. I've just rang my Ex (who's Australian) and he's devastated - one of his best friends used to work with Steve at his zoo. I loved seeing Steve all over the place when I was there. Poor chap.

I wasn't a super big fan, either, but I've always enjoyed watching him. It's so sad :(

Me too - and his son, and his wife... his whole family. They must be devastated.

One of the worst things about it is that Teri was somewhere up Cradle Mountain in Tassie when it happened. The rest of Australia knew about it three hours before they were able to get in contact with her to give her the news. I know he's a big celebrity and all that, and it would have been impossible to keep quiet long enough for his family to be appraised first, but still... there's something wrong with that.

There really IS something wrong with that. :( She should've known before anyone.

What if she'd heard about it on the radio or something??

My heart goes out to her and her children... cannot imagine what they must be going through right now.

It's weird - I know that he lived very dangerously, but he always came across as such a larger-than-life personality that it's still a shock that he's dead. He seemed sort of invincible, really.

It's sad, yes, but...I don't know if this translates overseas, but I actually can't think of a New Zealander who liked Steve Irwin. Not through anything he'd done - his personality just seemed to grate on us. And don't get me started on tacky merchandise.

But a death is always a terrible thing, especially when it's the father of young children.
