So I want to say up front that this isn't an "anti-" anything anyone else has done or any community has done. It's just my own take on a questions meme/blog prompts.

A lot of memes (fandom or not) ask pretty casual questions. Which are great for many people, but sometimes more in-depth questions are preferred. The object of this meme is to compile questions that are little deeper OR sillier. Obviously everyone's idea of deeper or interesting is going to be different, so no pressure. I want a mix. Ultimately, my goal is questions that lend themselves to conversation, as opposed to more brief answers. You can ask questions about fandom, opinions on various topics, life experiences, serious stuff, spiritual stuff, funny stuff, anything you like. Just try going for questions that lend themselves to more in-depth posts.

I figure I'll accept questions over the next month or so, depending on how many I get. Ask however many you want. Making it public so anyone can contribute!

I tend to think of my fandom participation in connection to what is happening in my life and to what my state of mind is, particularly if I am writing a long fic or super into a particular fandom or pairing. So it would be interesting to read what personal connections or personal history people remember or think about when they think about a fandom "moment."

For example, for me, my participation in Torchwood fandom was at a time when my wife was working a corporate job that involved a ton of travel and I was generally alone - especially during summer when I wasn't teaching. I didn't have many local friends so my primary interactions were online with other TW fans. And it wasn't showing here in TX so I would stay up late in order to torrent it as soon as it was available and then watch immediately so I could chat with friends online, write fic, etc. It was the center of my human interaction at the time and there was always this delightful urgency about keeping abreast with other fans.

So I was really invested in TW and consequently really devastated when it all started coming apart. From the outside, there was a lot of critique of "excessive" emotional attachment to the show and people judging other people's anger and unhappiness, but for me it makes total sense because I felt that same anger and unhappiness. I didn't rage at the creators, but what I did do is walk away from fandom participation for a long time and learn to limit my emotional attachment. It was a big turning point for me as far as how engaged I was.

I'm sure that kind of thing happens a lot, and I'm always curious about how people's background and history inform how they interact with a text or with the experience of fandom.

Thanks. I had trouble turning my idea into a concise question, I guess because I was thinking it through in writing.

Almost everyone from back then has gone to FB and they don’t really participate in fandom anymore. I do occasionally talk to a few people on Twitter about non- fandom stuff and one person is still here on DW though I mainly talk to her in Instagram.

I know people have talked about this, but the whole fragmentation of platforms has actually had a huge impact on fandom. We are broken up into different areas on the internet the same way that a lot of shows are available only on particular media platforms.

Hmm...

I think one would be if you could visit any time period what would it be and why?

Are you a one fandom person, or do you love a variety of fandoms?

If you could change one plot element about your favourite show/book/movie/whatever, what would it be?

Are you creative in your fandom? What do you create and why?

I think it would be interesting to discuss different approaches to fandom. People who are all in, people who are quiet, people who just enjoy interaction with a select few, things like that.

If you could see how the Universe began or how it ends, which would you choose?

What is your favourite genre of music? Why?

If you could only read one book for the rest of your life, which one would you choose?

Where is your dream vacation?

If you could have any career in the world, what would it be? If it is your current one, why is it you dream?
