Hermione says that Dumbledore saved him (at least, she does in my UK paperback): "He ran onto the pitch as you fell, waved his wand, and you sort of slowed down before you hit the ground." Ron then adds that Dumbledore 'magicked' Harry onto a stretcher and personally accompanied him to the hospital wing. I take this to mean that Harry fell very fast towards the ground, which is what most people saw, but Dumbledore slowed the descent, so the impact was much less than it could have been (and the ground was sodden, which helped).
