Snape was a Death Eater (though they don't know that yet) so technically he is capable of murder. He was perfectly happy to let James and Harry die as long as Lily was spared, after all...
Hermione really does not come off well in these chapters, which is something I do address in Watching for Wolves. Using the death of Lavender's pet to discredit Trelawney is a particularly bad moment. And even if Ron is being self-centred, he also has a point. :/
