Regarding Professor Snape, hmmm . . . I think if Malfoy's arm was actually hurt making Ron switch roots would have been fair, but Snape knows perfectly well it isn't. Plus, not the most intelligent move to have arch enemies working together--he was asking for trouble.
Even if the potion would not have hurt Trevor in the least, Snape was systematically abusive of Neville. As someone who was verbally and emotionally abused at that age by a teacher, I have every sympathy in the world for Neville. Snape was 100% in the wrong in his treatment of Neville, and I'm actually pretty sympathetic towards Snape, since I guessed the reason that Snape hated Harry very early on. (comes from reading the books for the first time in my thirties. ;))
Percy in these chapters . . . *shakes my head, sighing* Not one of Percy's better moments. Ditto that for Hermione.
