You download the instant messaging program of your choice (this depends on what the majority of your friends have, and if you want extra things, such as email alerts). Then you install it and sign up with a screenname. Then you have to add buddies who use the same program by adding their screenname. And then, if they are on and you are on, you can talk to each other.
I've tried AIM, YIM, MSN and ICQ and Trillion, which is a program that logs you into ALL of the other messaging programs with one program. If you have a Yahoo screenanme, I suggest trying that one first as you can start a small client without downloading anything. I use AIM the most now.
