To take a guess: a bunch of really bored Eastern European hackers who moved on from email virus scams to attacking sites itself... LJ is their test run before they attack Facebook.
I dunno if any of it's true... but sounds like a plot for a really cheesy blockbuster... complete with fangirls welding Uzis.
LJ is under DDoS attack either from Russian hackers or (if you really like conspiracy theories) the Russian government out to silence some anti-corruption LJ person.
