I don't think you really need a service level agreement, but obviously a casual one with someone you can trust is important.
And of course it's awful. I hate the feeling. But it's all about knowing that everyone is clear on what you want, and making sure you're clear on what to expect of the person - or people - you've chosen to send the story to.
