Fandom Snowflake Challenge: Fandom Memories
One of the prompts for the fandom snowflake challenge - which I'm not officially doing, but I have seen around - is to write about your memories of fandom. I've done SO MANY of those. So instead, I thought I would do it in a totally meta and unique way.
I went back in time to 2003, and interviewed a Harry Potter fan, known as Fan of Fandoms Past (FFP).Last time I did this, it was to recap PoA.
(Quick non-meta note: FFP is basically a parody of teenage Harry Potter fans in 2003. Particularly Marauder fans. Particularly the ones I was friends with. And myself.)
Me: Wow, January of 2003. Fifteen years ago..
FFP: So is Bush still President in 2018?
Me: Think about that for a minute.
FFP: Oh right. Okay. Is The Apprentice still on?
Me: ....maybe we shouldn't talk politics. So, fandom.
FFP: OMG fandom is INSANE right now. We can't wait for the fifth Harry Potter book.
Me: Really?
FFP: Fans are saying that Remus and Sirius will totally hook up. Hey, is that true?
Me: No. Remus... ends up with a woman. Fandom blows a gasket, but a lot of Remus/Sirius shippers contend that he's bisexual.
FFP: I sometimes think Dumbledore's gay.
Me: You do?
FFP: Hot4Sirius and I were just talking about that on AIM, actually. Oh, hold on, Hot4Sirius just invited me to a mini chatroom with our other friends, LoupGarou and QuidditchChaser!
Me: Aren't they a few decades apart?
FFP: Do you really think that'll ever stop fandom?
Me: .. fair point. So, what other fandomy things do you do?
FFP: Well, right now I'm working on a petition for Dumbledore to get SOX for Christmas.
Me: Don't you mean socks?
FFP: No, SOX. They're better than socks.
Me: Alrighty, then.
FFP: We've done serious things, too. We all raised money to get a card with Order of the Phoenix hints on them, but lost the auction. The money went to a literacy fund, and... we all realized that was way more important in the first place.
Me: Wow. That's actually pretty cool.
FFP: Yeah. It was a good life lesson.
Me: So, are these people on the internet your real friends? Even though you don't know them?
FFP: Of course! And I do know them, I just know them in a different way. Also, in a way, they know me better than anyone else. At school, I'm a mousy girl who reads in homeroom. Online, I'm me. The real me. The one all those preps and posers don't see -
Me: - okay, we get it, you're an emo teenager IRL. So, you'd say that fandom rocks?
FFP: No.
Me: Oh?

FFP: I just told you. Hot4Sirius, LoupGarou and QuidditchChaser.
Me: No, I mean - never mind.
FFP: They don't agree with my theory that Dumbledore's gay. They're probably right. Maybe it'll be like in that RPG I'm in, Dumbledore and McGonagall just got married.Me: Aren't they a few decades apart?

FFP: Fandom ROX.
Me: Well, I'd better get back to 2018, because I'm a grown up with a job now. But thank you.
FFP: Quick question - Sirius lives, right?
Me: Huh?
FFP: He survives the fifth book? He has to survive, right? And he, Remus and Harry become a happy family?
Me: ... a fangirl never tells.

I miss HP fandom a lot, when I stop and think about it.

Although OTOH, I don't know how well he would've worked in the other books. Especially DH. I hate to imagine Sirius being terrified for a year, then thinking towards the end that Harry died. Not to mention Remus and being killed off. But still. Poor Sirius. :(
