Aww. I remember telling a friend that there was NO WAY JKR would ever do that to Harry, and she agreed. Heh.
Although OTOH, I don't know how well he would've worked in the other books. Especially DH. I hate to imagine Sirius being terrified for a year, then thinking towards the end that Harry died. Not to mention Remus and being killed off. But still. Poor Sirius. :(
