LJ Topic Prompt #1: What's the Song?

Name a few songs you know a few words to, but you couldn't say who the singer was or even most of the lyrics. Can be past tense, if you've figured it out. Also feel free to apply this to other mediums - books you remember a bit about but couldn't name, etc.

I'll go. :)

One song I never knew the whole lyrics to was Natalie Imbrigulia's (sp?) "Torn." I knew the refrain:

I'm all out of faith
This is how I feel
I'm cold and I am shamed
Lying naked on the floor

But that was it. And I didn't even really know what went in between "this is how I feel" and "lying naked floor." So I'd have it in my head, but it would be "I'm all out of faith, this is how I feel, something some-thing, lying naked on the floor." I also think I mostly knew the songs from covers, rather than the actual artist, so I didn't know who she was.

(I figured it out because of a fic prompt. Naturally. Le sigh.)

There's also a song - possibly also from the nineties - that's something like "you make me crazy." I don't think it's Britney Spears's "Drive Me Crazy", though. The refrain is something like this:

You make me CRAY-zay

You make me cray-ZAY

You make me CRAY-zay...

As far as books go...

- When I took French in private school, we had to read a book about a little girl who wandered off even though her mother to be careful, lest a man with a name like "Creepy-leese" found her. Of course she did and he found her; he had a head like a pumpkin and hair like pasta. I don't remember anything else, just the story.

- I read a book where some girl found out she had AIDS, and it ends with her brother writing in her diary that he can't believe his sister's gone. I remember there was a part of the book where she says "it turns out AIDS doesn't aid you."

- In school we read a book about a boy who befriended a caveman - I'm not sure if one of them time traveled, or if he just happened to be a caveman.

I'm sure I'll think of more later.

So there you have it.

You can either give yours in the comments, or in a post of your own. :)

For the longest time (I was raised in a no-tv bubble by intellectuals, so my pop culture knowledge was/is spotty as fuck) I had this memory of they guy in black (Dread Pirate Roberts) also being the Six-Fingered Man in The Princess Bride. I was ~certain. And that's all I retained about the movie. When I saw it for what amounts to the first time in college I was surprised as heck, lol.

Ahh! I love that. I've seen that film so many times and yet seem to always forget the specifics.

On no! Now I have "Drive Me Crazy" stuck in my head lol! Any time something even reminds me of that song, it's suddenly stuck in my head.

Anyway, I might know all of the lyrics to "Torn" if I hear the song. It's one of those songs that used to (loudly) sing and sometimes I'll remember all of the words once I hear the tune lol.

I wonder if that thing where the character dies and their friend/sibling/someone finishes telling their story because they died is a thing. I vaguely remember reading like four books with similar endings. Although, the book that you're talking about isn't one of them XD It just jogged my memory!

Hm, interesting. This was a diary-style book, so it makes sense in that context, but it may be a thing in general?

[identity profile] icecoldrain.livejournal.com 2016-03-11 03:29 pm (UTC)(link)
They were also diary-style books. Each character died toward the end and it was picked up by someone they knew. One was picked up by a cousin they literally just met and knew for a day. Well, that book was weird enough so at that point I was just like what is going on lmao. The others it was like so-and-so died and this is so-and-so transcribing their final days. I'm wondering if it's a thing in diary type books where the narrator dies. Well, I guess it's anti-climatic for it to just end lol.

I thought I saw a man brought to life
He was warm he stayed around he was dignified
He showed me what it was to cry
You couldn't be that man I adored
You don't seem to know seem to care what your heart is for
I don't know him anymore
There's nothing where he used to lie
Our conversation has run dry
That's what's going on
Nothing's fine I'm torn...

Oddly, when I think of that song, I mostly think of the video.

Should you actually want to know what the books are, you could try asking in [livejournal.com profile] whatwasthatbook.

I always have trouble remembering the rest of the song framed around "Can't ever keep from falling apart at the seams/Can I believe you're breaking my heart to pieces." (Possibly because the rest of the song doesn't entirely make sense? It's Duran Duran's "She's Come Undone".)

And ZOMG, your "crazy" song made me think of the "She drives me crazy" song by the Fine Young Cannibals, which I haven't thought about in years.

Yes, I know the refrain of "Torn" like the back of my hand XD

The one where the boy who befriended a caveman might be Have Spacesuit, Will Travel, by Robert Heinlein. Although he was more friends with the Roman centurion than the caveman.

The songs went way over my head.

I'm pretty sure the one one with the boy and the caveman is Stig of the Dump by Clive King. I adored that book.

From the sounds of it, yeah, that's likely. I oddly don't remember loving or not loving it? I just remember it being read to us and that there was one part where the boy wondered whether Stig(?) hibernated during the winter.
