A Dragon's Eye View

Title: A Dragon's Eye View.

Summary: Thirty random facts about Charlie Weasley throughout his life. (Because twenty wasn't enough.)

Fandom: Harry Potter

Author: author_by_night

Ships: Remus/Tonks, Teddy/Victoire, Charlie/Tonks to an extent.

Rating: PG.

Charlie at thirteen

1. Charlie's best friends are Adam Gudgeon, Felicia Trixam and Dora Tonks. He supposes his Quidditch teammates also count, but he isn't sure they'd like him as much if he wasn't the best Seeker they'd ever had, Adam being the exception.

2. Charlie considers Bill his best friend at home, but at Hogwarts, they have their own lives; it isn't that they don't get along - it's simply that the school year is one time Charlie doesn't have to worry about his family's approval.

3. Charlie is the only person, apart from her parents, allowed to call Dora by that name. The reason for this is that Dora discovered Charlie's (poorly hidden) dragon collection; they now have an agreement that as long as Dora doesn't tell anyone else, even Adam and Felicia, he doesn't have to call her Tonks. Charlie continues to call her Tonks anyway - that's who she is.

4. Charlie sometimes still misses his Uncle Gideon. None of the others remember him, except for Bill; but Charlie remembers Uncle Gideon was his favorite. In fact, he thinks that Uncle Gideon was the one who taught him about dragons in the first place.

5. Although Charlie doesn't admit it to anyone, he loves when the twins, Ron and Ginny beg for him to play Dragon King with them.

Charlie at fifteen

1. Charlie has lost much of his interest in Quidditch. He still loves playing it, but it means less time to do the other things he loves. He would rather spend more time helping Hagrid with creatures, or reading about dragons.

2. When Charlie tells his teammates his plans to not play Quidditch his remaining two years at Hogwarts, they are more supportive than he thought they'd be; however, he can't help but notice that most of them, Adam aside, seem to talk to him a little less.

3. Charlie's new secret - now that it's 'out' that he likes dragons - is that he reads the Quibbler. He knows The Quibbler is mostly garbage, but he sometimes wonders about the truth in it.

4. Only Felicia knows Charlie is thinking of going to Romania. Charlie knows it would be sad for Adam, as Charlie is almost the only family he has thanks to the war, and for some reason, he can't bring himself to tell Tonks.

5. Of all his brothers, Charlie finds himself growing closest to Percy. He looks up to Bill, of course, and the twins, Ron and Ginny are fun to play with, but only Percy really shares his interest in magical creatures.

Charlie at eighteen

1. Charlie loves every bit of Tonks. He loves the way she can be silly and relaxed one moment, serious and focused the next; he loves her odd habits, like saying 'wotcher' and wiggling her hands when she laughs; he loves that she's not afraid to admit her family is the way it is, even though it has caused her to lose friends and boyfriends.

Sometimes it's hard not to kiss her on the spot.

2. Charlie has finally told his parents about his plans to go to Romania, now that Bill's in Egypt. His mother is terrified that he'll be captured by muggle communists; Ginny thinks he'll be eaten by a dragon. Percy is disappointed that they won't be at the Ministry together.

His father only seems relieved that he won't have to work for Cornelius Fudge.

3. One night when walking Tonks to the Hufflepuff Common Room, they almost kiss.

One of them stops, and neither is sure who - or why.

4. On Christmas Eve, Molly tells Charlie that his uncle also dreamed of going to Romania. She says that he didn't go because the love of his life, Mary, and brother, Fabian, were fighting the war.

Charlie knows he must fulfill his uncle's dreams.

5. When Tonks tells Charlie she wants to be an Auror, Charlie tells her he is going to Romania.

They admit their feelings for one another, but they also admit they don't think anything would ever be possible if they are in two very time consuming jobs in two different countries.

The next day, Tonks isn't in Defense Against the Dark Arts.

Charlie at nineteen

1. Charlie loves Romania. It's a rough life - early mornings, late nights, and he lives in a small cottage with three other people. But perhaps the ruggedness of it all is exactly what he likes.

2. When his parents visit, Arthur brings a note from Mary Cattermole. It says:

You probably don't remember me, but your uncle meant a lot to me. He would be so proud of you.

3. When Ron asks Charlie if he'll take in Hagrid's dragon, Charlie immediately contacts Felicia, Dora and Adam. It's an excuse to see them again... besides, they are all in agreement that no dragon should be near the Ministry of Magic.

4. Tonks admits to Charlie that she didn't come forth and tell Harry who she was; when Charlie asks why, she tells him, "it's a little awkward to talk to the boy whose parents were supposedly killed by your cousin."

For the first time, Charlie realizes how affected Tonks really is by her family.

5. The visit with his friends is lovely, but seeing Tonks is still awkward. He tries to find ways to make her want to stay, but finally, Felicia tells him she knows what he's doing - and it's breaking her heart.

Charlie vows to try and maintain his distance.

Charlie at twenty three

1. Charlie is torn between coming home and remaining in Romania. He decides to stay in Romania, to try and get those at the Reserve to help, but he still often wishes he were there.

2. When Charlie sees Tonks at a meeting during a brief visit home, the awkwardness is gone. In fact, it feels like they are at Hogwarts again - just two best friends and nothing more.

That is, until he realizes every time Remus Lupin makes a joke, she's the first to laugh; and every time Remus Lupin enters the room, she's the first to look at him.

He doesn't want to be jealous, but a part of him is.

3. When Percy finds out Charlie is in the Order, they have a row; Charlie can't understand how the little brother who once adored him could now be so dead set against him.

4. Charlie is surprised to find himself getting closer to Bill. Bill understands, more than anyone else, how it feels to be so far away when you want to be as close as possible.

5. One night when Charlie is visiting his father in the hospital, he spots Percy. Percy quietly tells him that he didn't think anyone would want to see him.

Charlie doesn't tell anyone but his father what happened - his father deserves to know, of course, but he feels it's up to Percy to tell the others.

Charlie at twenty five/twenty six

1. When Charlie finds out Mary Cattermole is missing, he thinks of his Uncle Gideon, and vows to try and find her.

2. Percy soon tells Charlie that he knows where Mary Cattermole is - safe. Charlie promises to repay him someday. Charlie wishes he could tell his family he is back in touch with Percy, but he knows it's safest not to; the fewer people who know, the better.

3. Felicia, Adam and Charlie are there when Teddy is born; when Charlie sees how happy Remus and Tonks are, he knows that no matter how much he wishes he and Tonks could be together, she was meant for this moment.

4. They are also the ones who find Remus and Tonks, during the Battle; Charlie stops in his tracks, and next thing he knows, the battle is over.

5. A week later, Charlie still cannot remember anything past seeing his best friend and first love on the ground. All he knows is that he has lost two people - Fred and Tonks - he loved dearly. Nothing else matters.

Charlie after the war

1. Charlie goes through a time of extreme grieving; he wants to hold Tonks in his arms. He wants to hear Fred laugh, just once more. He wants to see Ron looking more innocent, less like he lost a year of his life. He wants to be able to talk to Adam and Felicia without any tense pauses as they notice an empty chair, notice that Andromeda's the one holding Teddy, not their best friend.

2. Eventually, Charlie manages to turn his thoughts of Fred and Tonks into something positive. He knows he'll never stop missing them, but he realizes he truly can enjoy the happier memories.

3. When Charlie finds out Bill and Fleur gave Louis the middle name of "Gideon", he feels a strange sense of joy, as though he got something back.

4. One day, Victoire tells Charlie - her favorite uncle - that she has a crush on one Teddy Lupin. Although this makes Charlie a little sad, he smiles when he imagines Tonks laughing at the irony.

5. Years later, Charlie has still not found love; for the couple of years before and after the war, it was because every girl was compared to Tonks - unintentionally, of course, but nobody ever seemed to be what she had been.

But now, he realizes he doesn't need a girlfriend or a wife. He has Adam and Felicia, still supportive enough of his love for dragons to smuggle one across Europe; he has his two families, one in England and the other in Romania; and, most of all, he has the dragons he adores and protects.

As for Uncle Gideon, Fred, and Tonks... they're not really gone, are they?

This is really great! I like seeing the different insights into his life.

One teeny concrit.

"3. Charlie is the only person, apart from her parents, allowed to call Dora by that name. The reason for this is that Dora discovered Charlie's (poorly hidden) dragon collection; they now have an agreement that as long as Dora doesn't tell anyone else, even Adam and Felicia, he doesn't have to call her Tonks."

This has Tonks giving Charlie a privilege contingent on what she does. Normally Person A consents to something if Person B does something else. But you have it all about Person A. Does that make sense?

Wait, I can explain it better.

"You can call me Dora, but only if I promise not to tell anyone about your dragons."

That doesn't really make sense.

Hm... well, really it's a silly deal between two kids. But Tonks also will keep something important a secret - not that she sees anything wrong with it, but she knows Charlie does. She probably would've kept it a secret anyway.

You've got a point though, now that you mention it. Hm...

ETA: I remembered that it was actually something I meant to edit out. I've changed it a little.

I liked how you tied together Charlie's feelings for Tonks, his Uncle Gideon, and his brother Fred and how you had these feelings affect his life. I'm glad that you gave him a set of friends that followed him through out the different ages.

You show how life often pulls people apart.

I enjoyed this and was very happy to see it show up on my friends list. It was fun to see your Harry Potter writing again.

I love this -- Charlie's changes over time are great, and just like the title says, it's fascinating to see things through Charlie's eyes.
