CHECK TLC!

COOLNESS!

No, this isn't about book seven. But something that's still cool is there! :D

AHHHHHH! WHEEEEE!

[identity profile] prettyveela.livejournal.com 2006-02-12 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you mean that new layout or the new information about the black family?

[identity profile] author-by-night.livejournal.com 2006-02-12 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
The new info... sorry, I'm a House of Black freak. I have been since reading OoTP.

OH, AWESOME! *g*

Thanks for pointing this out, by the way. I only check TLC when I first log in, so I wouldn't have seen this until tomorrow. I'm so glad that there's a better version of the family tree! :D

Interesting -- but looking at Narcissa's birthdate, I think JKR has just revealed herself to be even more mathematically challenged than we thought :)

[identity profile] author-by-night.livejournal.com 2006-02-12 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Not really, if Sirius was born in '59. Or am I missing something? (I'm not exactly great at maths either...) But Sirius was born in 59, he was 22 in 1981, according to JKR's site. (I think.)

[identity profile] a-t-rain.livejournal.com 2006-02-12 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, the problem is that Bellatrix is supposed to be older than Narcissa, but she's also described as a member of the "gang of Slytherins" that Snape used to hang out with in school, which seems quite unlikely if she's 5+ years older than him.

[identity profile] author-by-night.livejournal.com 2006-02-12 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh! Yeah, that is a problem. I honestly decided Sirius was either talking about Rabastan and Rodolphous (who could've been a bit younger), Snape was friends with the older students, or Sirius was just being bitter. After all, he also said Snape was really popular, when OoTP contradicted that.

Plus, JKR contradicts herself. The tree also makes it look like wizards have perfectly normal life spans, when she said they had longer ones...

[identity profile] a-t-rain.livejournal.com 2006-02-12 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think he says that Snape was popular, exactly -- just that he was "famous" for his interest in the Dark Arts, and that he was "part of a gang of Slytherins who nearly all turned out to be Death Eaters."

But yeah, I have a feeling JKR has forgotten all about that gang -- which is a shame, since Narcissa Malfoy's 1975 was one of the first really good fanfics I read, and I've had a soft spot for the whole crew ever since.

[identity profile] author-by-night.livejournal.com 2006-02-12 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I think between GoF and OoTP, JKR did a lot of canon shifting. I doubt Mafalda the Weasley Cousin was the only edit. It took three years, and a lot happens plotwise in that time frame. You decide "I don't like this idea anymore", etc.

[identity profile] bribitribbit.livejournal.com 2006-02-12 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
She's also described as a member of the "gang of Slytherins" that Snape used to hang out with in school...

She is? Argh.

[identity profile] newyork-noodles.livejournal.com 2006-02-12 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
All the careful calculations I did Cissy-wise have just fallen apart at the seams. Damnit!

Is it unethical to ignore that aspect of the tree and ruthlessly exploit everything else? :-)

[identity profile] author-by-night.livejournal.com 2006-02-13 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
Well, a friend of mine is writing a fic where Sirius's wife is a LOTR type Elf (sort of), so I don't think it really is unethical to ignore canon. As long as you make it AU. ;)

But seruously... it's contradictory in some ways anyway.

That's a lot of burn marks! Some family has a lot of black sheep! And while she might have missed on Narcissa's age, it looks like [livejournal.com profile] fernwithy was pretty spot-on with Bella's and Andromeda's (if Bella and Severus were at school together at all; otherwise both could be a bit older).
