When I first started reading the books, I was only about eleven or twelve, and at the time, I didn't notice that kind of thing as much. It sort of fell under the 'good vs. evil' category in my head then. Now, I'd look at it and say it was dark, though even most childrens' movies I remember had some kind of villain who didn't mind killing people.
