I don't know anything about Ugly Betty, but in Mad Men's defense, that's how things were in the '60s to some degree. I'm not saying it's necessarily appropriate or "correct", but with women in the work force, I feel like the advice Peggy was given takes on a whole new light. Now I don't know the other fandoms mentioned, but I feel like the historical context changes things a little. Don is a jerk, and treats everyone like that, but all the guys treated Peggy with a lack of respect, partly because she was a woman. Her work ethic/hard work could not be seen as better than the men's... clearly she was *incapable* or *inferior*. Again, not saying it's something I agree with, but in shows with historical implications, I feel like we should sort of look at it through that lens, as well.
