Super-bothered by it as well. Completely misses the point of the book, imo, and it's only redeemed by the fact that the fandom is amazing and full of crazy AUs.
The thing is that Andy is at no point forced to keep this job. ... Furthermore, there's no pressing need for it, apart from it looking good on her resume. She's not struggling to make rent, she's not doing an internship (which would be bad to blow off). Also, Andy doesn't need to answer her cellphone; like I said, most of her conflicts would've been avoidable had she just kept it turned off or ignored it, like when she was about to see Chicago with her Dad. Andy wants to, because she wants this job.
I thought it was stated at one point that if she left before a year was up, she'd get no recommendation and Miranda would use her influence to keep her from getting any kind of decent job afterward. And I think if she ignored her cellphone she'd get fired like that. *snaps*
To be fair to Ugly Betty, which I've been marathonning lately, while the "Ignacio has a heart attack and Betty isn't there because she's stealing a dress omggggggg" episode was awful, that trope doesn't actually come up that much of the time. When it does, it's glaringly awkward because most of the time, her family is supportive.
