Ron

Why is it that people seem to reallly like Hermione and Harry, but hate Ron? I personally think Hermione and Harry can be as tactless as he can be  - and in the case of Hermione, a little more dangerous. I don't think Ron would send a middle aged woman into the path of centaurs, and not even express fear afterwards. (I know Ron snorted about her fear aftwrwards, but he wasn' there to see the Centaurs meant buisiness. Hermione nad Harry were).

I'm not saying Ron has no flaws - he does. But you can't tell me you can accept everyone else but think he's a loser.

but it seems sometimes as though Rowling no longer knew what to do with him and just keeps him around as the comic relief

I don't know... she's done serious things with him as well. I think his more "comic relief" moments are only truly comical at his expense. He *did* become Prefect, and although Harry would've, I think DUmbledore chose Ron instead for more reason than an alternative to Harry.

Well, even if Dumbledore said he didn't make Harry a Prefect because he had enough to deal with already, it doesn't mean that Ron is that much worse off... There are other boys in Gryffindor that Dumbledore could have picked, yet he did choose Ron.
