Dawn is actually my favorite (especially once I figured out what was up with her, the intro was very o.o). I'm glad to see this essay.
I love how convincingly teenager she is, and how she's confused and acting out as a result of feeling alone and left out and trying to figure out who she is, but ultimately means well. It's a kind of story I want to see more of, and watching her grow and learn to be there for the people around her is rewarding.
And I felt so awful for her, with the Key stuff, and the identity stuff there is fascinating.
And Dawn & Spike is one of my favorite relationships in the show.
I do agree, her intro could be better -- I was fortunate enough to come into the show late, so I missed out on the group confusion (and I was watching with a friend who had watched before and who told me to have faith, and I was predisposed to like Dawn because I have a soft spot for her character type). I imagine it would have been a LOT more confusing and disappointing without those things.
And you bring up a good point about OCs! Thank you!
